Axenic aerobic biofilms inhibit corrosion of copper and aluminum

Abstract: The corrosion behavior of unalloyed copper and aluminum alloy 2024 in modified Baar's medium has been studied with continuous reactors using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. An axenic aerobic biofilm of either Pseudomonas fragi K or Bacillus brevis 18 was able to lessen corrosion as evidenced by a consistent 20-fold increase in the low-frequency impedance value of copper as well as by a consistent four- to seven-fold increase in the polarization resistance of aluminum 2024 after six days exposure compar… Show more

“…Although a biofilm is observed at the MC area in many cases, some investigators have reported that biofilm formation inhibits metal corrosion (Jayaraman et al 1999a and1999b;Ornek et al, 2002). One possibility has been proposed that oxygen depletion by low corrosion activity bacteria inhibits high corrosion activity bacterial growth on the metal surface.…”

“…The cathodic protection method has been applied to some pipelines, but causes them to become fragile because of the hydrogen found in ferritic stainless steel (Ibars et al, 1992). Recently, T. K. Wood and his colleagues have reported that bacilli biofilms inhibited metal corrosion caused by SRB (Jayaraman et al, 1999a and1999b;Ornek et al, 2002). This method seems to be useful if the bacilli biofilms are controlled.…”

“…Do istog zaključka došli su i Jayaraman sa saradnicima [26,35,36] u svojim istrazivanjima ispitujući koroziono ponašanje čelika (SAE 1018), bakra i aluminijuma [37] u prisustvu različitih bakterija (Bacillus brevis 18 i Pseudomonas fragi K). Uočeno je da bakterije Pseudomonas fragi i Escherichia coli DH5α formiraju zaštitni biofilm na površini čelika štiteći ga na taj način od korozije.…”

“…Furthermore, the corrosion products produced due to SRB activity further limits the effectiveness of the antimicrobials used (Videla and Herrera, 2007). Once biocorrosive bacteria become established and form biofilms, it becomes extremely difficult to remove or kill them (Jayaraman et al, 1999b;Zuo et al, 2004). Instead of killing all SRB and other biocorrosive bacteria in the system, a strategy can be developed to prevent the colonisation of SRB from within the biofilm itself (Jayaraman et al, 1999b).…”

“…An increase in depth of biofilm is known to correspond to a greater reduction in corrosion (Jayaraman et al, 1999b). Aerobic P. cichorii was able to inhibit corrosion of mild steel due to a layer of passive oxide products formed during corrosion which was trapped in the biofilm (Chongdar et al, 2005).…”
