Recently, the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and Industry 4.0 paradigms have attracted considerable relevance by leading all manufacturing companies to invest in IIoT solutions in order to be competitive on the market. Despite the huge number of IIoT solutions on the market, all platforms refer to a common architectural model and share the same functionalities. Among these functionalities, the most relevant is the capability of deploy and run custom containerized applications. This feature has a pivotal role of customizing the IIoT platform and tailoring it to each business scenario. In this paper, we define the general architectural model and common functionalities of the IIoT platforms. Then, we analyze and compare two of the most used IIoT solutions on the market, Siemens Industrial Edge, and EdgeX Foundry. We also define three metrics for evaluating the functionality of deploying custom services on the edge, and we test these two platforms. Finally, we present their comparative performance, advantages, and limitations.

The life expectancy of the elderly has substantially increased compared to earlier times. The primary factors are greater awareness of nutrition, the environment, and personal hygiene. Advances in science and technology have also extended the lifespans of the aging population. Traditional care methods are inadequate to address this situation. To maintain the socioeconomic structure, there is a need for the integration of advanced frameworks. In this context, we propose a smart framework called human activity Internet of Things-enabled environment (HAIE) to provide a non-human assistive environment that helps the elderly live independently. Research into aging in place and assistive environments has focused on modernized environments, largely neglecting the impact of technology on the lives of elderly individuals who stay at home. This work addresses the gap by integrating advanced technologies, such as cloud computing and the Internet of Things (IoT). The inclusion of IoT facilitates a smart and automated environment for the elderly. Cloud integration enables the storage of large volumes of data for further analysis and the identification of patterns for future advancements. It also introduces the concept of accessing data from anywhere, on any device, at any time. To validate this work, two primary parameters were considered: accuracy and latency. Through simulation, the proposed HAIE model has demonstrated an accuracy of 93% out of 100 attempts and a latency of 84.35 ms for the deployed case studies under the HAIE framework.

This study aimed to elucidate the diverse applications and concrete advantages of incorporating IoT technology into the agricultural sector of the United States. This paper highlights the potential of IoT to address difficulties and create possibilities for resilience and sustainable advancement in agriculture. It does so by examining numerous case studies across different aspects of agricultural production. Recent findings indicate that the United States has significant potential for the use of Internet of Things (IoT) technology in agriculture. This has the potential to completely transform farming methods and enhance productivity, sustainability, and profitability. Utilising IoT technology in precision agriculture enables specific methods for irrigation, fertilisation, and insect control, resulting in increased crop production and decreased environmental impact. Nevertheless, there are significant obstacles that continue to exist, such as the upfront investment required for IoT infrastructure, apprehensions about the confidentiality and security of data, challenges related to compatibility, and the widespread lack of access to digital technology in rural regions. To tackle these problems, it is essential for stakeholders to work together, which involves providing financial support, establishing legislative frameworks, offering expert technical guidance and education, and improving accessibility to infrastructure. By taking coordinated and determined steps, the agriculture industry may overcome these challenges, thereby harnessing the complete capabilities of IoT technology to promote sustainable development and adaptability.
