BackgroundPrimary immunodeficiency disorders (PIDD) are of various types and severities, and they are associated with a delay in diagnosis. Early diagnosis of PIDD helps to improve the quality of life of affected children and prevent permanent consequences such as organ damage. Hence, awareness of PIDD is a must in the community to aid in early detection. ObjectivesThe study aims to investigate the general population's awareness of PIDD in children in Arar, Northern Saudi Arabia. MethodsA cross-sectional design was utilized to determine the awareness of PIDD in children in Arar, Northern Saudi Arabia. The participants were selected through an online self-administered questionnaire. The collected data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. ResultsA total of 528 participants were involved in the current study. The majority of the sample population falls within the 20-30 age range. 9.1% of respondents know a child with primary immunodeficiency. Additionally, participants were aware of certain symptoms, such as delayed growth and chronic diarrhea, with rates of 47.0% and 34.1%, respectively. On the other hand, symptoms like otitis media and sinusitis have lower awareness rates of 25.8% and 33.3%, respectively. ConclusionThis study can help in developing targeted awareness campaigns and educational programs to improve the understanding of primary immune deficiency disease among the general population in Saudi Arabia. This, in turn, can lead to earlier diagnosis and better management of the disease in children, ultimately improving their quality of life.

Introduction: Despite recent advances in diagnosing and treating primary immunodeficiency (PID), delay in diagnosis is still an important health problem. Aim: To evaluate the awareness of physicians in Türkiye about PID. Material and methods: Internal medicine, infectious diseases, and family physicians were included in the study. The questionnaire included questions about demographic characteristics, PID education, and knowledge. The '10 warning signs of PID' developed by the Jeffrey Modell Foundation (JMF) as warning signs of PID were also scored. The total score was calculated, and an awareness comparison was made between the three physician groups. Results: A total of 320 physicians were included in the study. The mean age of the participants was 32 years (IQR: 25-68 years). Approximately one-third of physicians stated that they had never received any training on PID, and only 20% had followed a patient diagnosed with PID. Recurrent opportunistic infections were the most common symptom of PID (77.8%). Only 6.6% of the physicians were familiar with all the warning signs of PID, and no significant difference was found between the physician groups. Conclusions: In this study, it was revealed that there is a significant lack of awareness about PID among physicians. Delay in PID diagnosis and treatment is one of the most important reasons for the deterioration of patients' quality of life. Increasing the awareness of this disease by increasing physicians' education about PID is an essential step toward early diagnosis and treatment.

Background: This study analyzes the immune system parameters of intern doctors working actively during the COVID-19 pandemic. When an intern doctor failed to respond to the treatment during a severe COVID-19 condition, the immune system panel was examined and as a result, it revealed an underlying immunodeficiency. The death of the intern doctor caused several concerns among other intern doctors, and for this reason, their immune systems were also considered to be examined. This study aims to demonstrate that immunodeficiencies might be more common than is known among the general population. Methods: In this single-center study, the demographic characteristics and European Society for Immunodeficiencies (ESID) diagnostic criteria of 92 intern doctors have been examined retrospectively. For the study, immune system parameters (complete blood count, serum immunoglobulins and subgroup levels, specific vaccine responses, isohemagglutinin titers, lymphocyte subgroups, and class-switched memory B cell (cSMB) levels have been evaluated. Results: When the demographic characteristics have been analyzed it is seen that the median age is 23.6 (21-28) years, and 64 (70%) of the intern doctors are female. In immune system parameters, one or more are found to be low in 51.08% of the doctors. Among the immunoglobulin subgroups, low IgG4 has been the most common. Selective IgA deficiency has been detected in 2.17% and selective IgM deficiency has been detected in also 2.17% of them. Low B cells (CD19+) are detected in 10.9% and low levels of class-switched memory B cells are found in 35.7% of them. Conclusion: This study reveals that deficient immunological parameters, especially selective Ig A, selective IgM deficiency, and low IgG4, might be more frequent than known. Depending on the data, it can be concluded that immunodeficiency might be more common than it is known among the general population; however, low immunological parameters alone do not lead to immunodeficiency.
