Percutaneous Laser Disc Decompression (PLDD) is a minimally invasive procedure for disc herniation that is known to be faster and effective. This retrospective study is analytic observational. The study was conducted at the Regional General Hospital Dr. Moewardi Surakarta. Subjects were patients who had PLDD from January 2020 to December 2020 with total sample of 30 respondents. Evaluation of the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and The Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) was performed before the PLDD action was carried out, 1 month, and 3 months after. The Macnab criteria was evaluated 3 months after the PLDD action. There was a significant difference in VAS between before and after PLDD, 1 month, and 3 months. There was a significant difference in the ODI score before and after 1 month and 3 months, but not in the ODI value after 1 month and 3 months. Twenty patients (66.7%) showed good good satisfaction following PLDD with Macnab criteria. The significant improvement in VAS of patients with lumbar disc herniation after PLDD were directly as a result of decreasing intradiscal pressure due to vaporization by laser energy, especially in the herniated area and tissue pressure. As the pain subsided, ODI scores in this patients would improve. PLDD in patients with intact lumbar disc herniation led to a significant improvement in VAS and ODI scores. PLDD can be used as an option in the management of patients with low back pain due to an intact lumbar disc herniation.

Background: Disc herniation is a condition where tearing occurs in the outer annular layer of the intervertebral pad leading the inner gel-like material to bulge ouwards the spinal cord, due to the high load of the vertebrae. This will produce back pain and symptoms in different sites according to the level of the herniation in the vertebral column. Aim: To compare the level of awareness regarding disc herniation among the general population and medical students in Jeddah. Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted through an electronic questionnaire to assess the level of awareness regarding disc prolapse among the general population and medical students in Jeddah. The questionnaire was in the Arabic language, it was taken and validated by the previous study which took place in Taif. Results: Our studied sample involved 1026 individuals aged between 11 and 99 years, with a mean age of 34.03 ± 13.28 years old. More than half of the respondents were female (55.4%), most of them were Saudi nationals (90.1%), and most of them have received a higher education (67.7%). Results showed that 54.1% of the general population and 77.7% of medical students reported good knowledge regarding this condition. Conclusion: This study revealed that the level of awareness regarding disc prolapse among the general population and medical students was poor in some respects such as: knowledge about the preventive measures, symptoms of the disease, the most common site in the spine affected by the disease, and the gold standard imaging method to diagnose this disease.

Introduction: Disc pathology is the most frequent cause of chronic LBP, with 39% of cases of LBP presenting with intervertebral disc disease, which makes it the most common condition among the degenerative abnormalities of the lumbar spine. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the knowledge and awareness of lumbar disc herniation among the public in single region in Saudi Arabia. Methods and Materials: This is a cross-sectional questionnairebased study that was conducted among general population of Al Ahsa, the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia in the period between January 2022 and June 2022. A previously published questionnaire in literature with similar research objectives was used in this study. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) v22. Results considered statistically significant with a P value less than 0.05. Results: A total of 995 participants completed the study questionnaire. A total of 100 (10.1%) were diagnosed with disc prolapse and 243 (24.4%) attended or watched an awareness about disc herniation. The exact 298 (29.9%) participants had good awareness levels, while 697 (70.1%) had poor awareness levels regarding Lumbar disc herniation (LDH), risk factors, clinical features and management. Conclusion:The study concluded that public awareness regarding lumbar disc herniation in Al-Ahsa was poor. Although, a good awareness level was observed among some groups such as, age group between 20-35 years, university educated, health care workers, single, high-income category and participants who had prior knowledge about the disease.
