Background Over the past few years, five domains of importance about the current state of bioethics in Saudi Arabia have shaped the perspective of most research: doctor-patient relationship, informed consent, do-not-resuscitate, organ donation, and transplantation, medical students’ knowledge and attitudes about medical ethics curriculum. This systematic review aimed to systematically identify, compile, describe and discuss ethical arguments and concepts in the best-studied domains of bioethics in Saudi Arabia and to present cultural, social, educational, and humane perspectives. Methods Six databases were searched using Boolean operators (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, CINAHL, Google Scholar) from December 2020–June 2021. The search and report process followed the statement and flowchart of preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA). Resutls The search resulted in 1651 articles, of which 82 studies were selected for a final review and assessment. There is a gradual increase in research, whereby a substantial increase was observed from 2017. Most of the published articles focused on ‘Organ Donation & Transplantation’ with 33 articles, followed by ‘Doctor-Patient Relations’ with 18 publications. Most of the published articles were from Central Province (33), followed by Western Province (16). The authorship pattern showed a collaborative approach among researchers. The thematic analysis of keywords analysis showed that ‘Saudi Arabia,’ ‘attitude PHC,’ ‘organ donation,’ ‘knowledge and education,’ and ‘donation’ have been used the most commonly. Conclusion This systematic quantitative synthesis is expected to guide researchers, stakeholders, and policymakers about the strengths and gaps in knowledge and attitudes regarding medical ethics in Saudi Arabia, both among the general public and health professionals.

Objective: To assess magnitude of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) among type-1 diabetics and to identify associated risk factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 236 type-1 diabetics in Makkah Al-Mukarramah City, Saudi Arabia. Results: Among participants, 59.3% were males, 44.1% were diabetic for more than 5 years, while 70.8% reported past history of DKA. The main causes of DKA were gfirst presentation of the diseaseh (40.9%), and gdiscontinued treatmenth (37%). The HbA1c among 53.6% was above 9%. Almost all cases who experienced DKA were hospitalised (98.8%). Out of them, 9 (5.4%) suffered complications. Female patients were more likely to suffer from episodes of DKA than males (76% and 68.3%, respectively). Most patients whose parentsf highest education was primary level had DKA more frequently than those whose parentsf had postgraduate education. Patients with unemployed fathers had significantly higher frequency of DKA (p=0.004). Ketoacidosis was significantly more frequent among patients with parentsf consanguinity (p<0.001). Patients who had their current HbA1c level exceeding 9% had positive history of DKA compared to those with HbA1c level .7% (87.9% and 28.6%, respectively, p<0.001). Conclusion: Most type-1 diabetics experience DKA, mainly with their first presentation of disease or due to discontinuation of treatment. DKA tends to occur more frequently among female patients, those with less educated parents or when their parents are relatives. Awareness about Eye Donation among Medical Students

To assess the awareness about eye donation among undergraduate medical students. A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out among 400 medical students studying in a tertiary medical college/hospital located in Tamil Nadu. The study tool used was a semi-structured google form questionnaire designed for assessing the awareness about eye donation among medical students. It was observed that the majority of the students (99.4%) of the students were aware of eye donation. Media has been the primary source for this awareness. The cornea is the part of the eye used for transplantation, and only 238(59.6%) knew about this The identity of the donor. The recipient will be kept confidential, and also the donors family will not be charged any money for the donation, but only 54% of the students were aware of this fact. Though the awareness was high, only 206(51.60%) were willing to pledge their eyes for donation. The study highlights the importance of educating medical students about eye donation as they play a significant role in helping the public in clarifying misconceptions and also increase the eye donation rates. The importance of consent over the telephone has also been emphasized in this study. Media can be used as a powerful tool in creating appropriate advertisements through television, newspapers, billboards and social media, which will be helpful.
