Awareness and teamwork in computer-supported collaborations

Abstract: A contemporary approach to describing and theorizing about joint human endeavor is to posit 'knowledge in common' as a basis for awareness and coordination. Recent analysis has identified weaknesses in this approach even as it is typically employed in relatively simple task contexts. We suggest that in realistically complex circumstances, people share activities and not merely concepts. We describe a framework for understanding joint endeavor in terms of four facets of activity awareness: common ground, commun… Show more

“…For example, one blog entry about quantitative design talks about cognitive performance modeling and why 'your mom 3 ' is not statistically significant, or more formally, why it could be a mistake to rely on cursory single cases, or worse, imagined single cases. According to the UX director, the downside of providing data all of the time for design decisions is that the community is afraid to commit to changes unless they are backed up by science and that what the UX team is striving for is to have the community accept that some design changes can be playful and open for discussion.…”

“…Projects have also been challenged by issues of trust between the client and the service (Srinivasan, 2007;Veeraraghavan, 2007). These findings can be related to findings in Computer Supported Cooperative Work that highlight not only common ground, but communities of practice, social capital and human development (Carroll et al, 2006). Recent work by Patel et al (2010) suggests some potential for audio based forum approaches in which farmers are able to hear and respond to each others' queries.…”
