Background: Influenza is an acute respiratory tract infection caused by influenza virus, of which there are 3 types- A, B and C. All known pandemics were caused by influenza A strains. The objectives of the study were to study the awareness of H1N1 influenza (swine flu) among rural population and to examine the association between socio demographic variables and awareness of H1N1 influenza (swine flu).Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in the three villages of Chittoor district (Amudala Kona, Rupalanaik Thanda, Kothakadapalli) where health camps were conducted. A total of 167 rural adults were interviewed who attended the camps.Results: Majority of the study participants were illiterates (50.3%).Only 59 (35%) participants previously heard about the disease H1N1 influenza (swine flu). Majority of them 26 (44.1%) didn’t knew the cause of swine flu. Media was the most common source of information (76.3%). Only 49.2% of participants were aware about transmission of disease. Majority of them were not aware i.e. 36 (61%)regarding treatment and investigation availability for H1N1 influenza (swine flu), but only 15.3% people were aware about the vaccine availability for the disease.Conclusions: Overall awareness regarding H1N1 flu was low among rural adults. Low awareness denotes poor mass media coverage in rural community. As most of the participants are illiterates, use of TV and mass media as an effective media to dissipate information must be utilized to maximum. Awareness generated by health staff is not significant. Health workers at primary level should be equipped with knowledge and skills in order to create awareness and organize Health education sessions in all areas which can be made more effective by involving Public Health Professionals to develop communication messages.

Background:Swine flu caused by influenza virus and it's a respiratory disease of pigs. The people like farmers and pork processors working in close proximity with pigs are at higher risk of getting swine flu. In India, a total of 117 deaths and 1,154 cases have been reported in the first two months of year 2018.Objectives:To assess the community perception about Swine flu among adults in an urban slum of District Rohtak.Methodology:The study was a community based epidemiological study with cross-sectional design and carried out by visiting house to house. The study recruited 500 adults of age 18-60 years.Results:The study found that there was no significant difference between gender and age with heard of swine flu while education wise (p= 0.002) and caste wise (p=0.011) awareness of swine flu was found to be statistically significant.Conclusion and Recommendation:The study concluded that the majority of subjects heard about swine flu and majority of subjects said that swine flu spread after coughing or sneezing. The study recommends that health care functionaries should spread awareness about signs and symptoms of swine flu.

Purpose This study aims to measure the level of public awareness about the threat of the emerging coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic among the Omani population. It also aims to investigate the mediating effect of the Omanis’ attitudes and behaviors with underlying conditions of COVID-19. Design/methodology/approach A cross-sectional study was conducted to collect data via an online survey of Omani citizens and residents from various geographic areas in Oman, 305 responses were received. SPSS and partial least square-structural equation modeling were used for data analysis. Findings The study revealed that public awareness regarding the COVID-19 pandemic was significantly influenced by people’s perceived risk, information source and health-related knowledge. Further, preventive behavior during the disease spread has a significant direct and indirect impact on their awareness. However, an insignificant mediation effect of public attitude was found between the source of information and public awareness. Research limitations/implications This study is limited by the scarcity of related literature in the Omani context. It is recommended that future research complete an in-depth study of public awareness regarding COVID-19, using other constructs and/or other data collection techniques. Practical implications This research will provide governmental health authorities and policymakers with a guideline to establish more efficient pandemic containment strategies to control public behavior toward the COVID-19 pandemic and curb viral prevalence. Social implications This research will help in improving prevention measures against COVID-19 are recommended to be more educated through a more effective mechanism to raise public attitude regarding pandemic prevalence positively. Originality/value The originality of this research can be drawn from key findings that indicate that people overall gained knowledge about how to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic and the accuracy of information significantly impacts public awareness.
