Awareness and Practice of Vaccination of Chronic Hemodialysis Patients by Specialist Nephrology Practitioners in Nigeria: A Cross-Sectional Survey

Abstract: Vaccination of hemodialysis (HD) patients reduces mortality and infection transmission in dialysis units, but its practice is perceivably poor in Nigeria with no study quantifying the level of awareness and practice to date. A questionnaire-based, cross-sectional study on nephrologists was designed. Average group performance scores were calculated for each professional group. Data were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 20.0 software. The mean age of a total of 142 respondents w… Show more

“…Another key point is the awareness of healthcare professionals about adult vaccination. For example, nephrology practitioners were asked about adult vaccination awareness for patients with chronic kidney disease in a study (22). While all 32 consultants told that CKD patients should have a vaccine against the Hepatitis B virus, only 19 of them agree with this for the influenza virus and only 22 of them agree with pneumococcus vaccination (22).…”

However, we think that there is a need for more comprehensive studies on this subject.…”

“…The practices for infection prevention among patients undergoing hemodialysis were mainly based on the evidence from general populations rather than those uniquely for patients undergoing hemodialysis ( 1 , 3 , 6 ). Catheter-related infections were hemodialysis-specific and most studied ( 17 , 28 , 29 ).…”

“…The 30 and 180-day case-fatality rates for pneumonia episodes were 10.7 and 24.8%, respectively ( 4 ). The preventive methods against infections were mainly recommendations of hand hygiene, wearing masks when presenting respiratory symptoms, and vaccination, which were based on evidence from the general population rather than from patients undergoing hemodialysis ( 5 , 6 ). More effective measures are needed to minimize the risk of infection.…”

“…The minimum sample size of 90 for this study was calculated using the formula for finite population size. The significant level was set to 0.05, the standard normal variate of 1.96 (at 95% confidence level), the precision of 5%, and prevalence were taken as 69% of physicians with good knowledge of vaccine from a previous study (16). The targeted sample size was achieved between December 2021 and January 2022 using the purposive sampling technique.…”
