Background: Studies on osteoporosis awareness among the general population in China are still limited. We examined the level of osteoporosis awareness among residents in China, determined the risk factors associated with a lower level of osteoporosis awareness, and assessed the sources of their knowledge about osteoporosis. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study among 368 general residents aged 30 years or older from 19 provinces during January-March 2018 in China. All participants were identified and interviewed face-to-face by medical students in Jilin University using a structured questionnaire. Osteoporosis awareness scores (percent of the correct answer) were determined across several domains, including definition, diagnosis, risk factors, and prevention of osteoporosis. We used multiple linear regression models to test the relationship between risk factors and overall awareness scores. Results: The mean age of included participants was 52.9 ± 10.2 years, and 53% of them were male. Osteoporosis awareness score for definition was 77.7%, diagnosis 49.6%, risk factors 49.2%, treatment 60.5%, and prevention 69.9%. The overall awareness score was 67.8%. Lower family income and education level were significantly associated with lower overall awareness score (all p < 0.05). Television or radio health program was reported to be their main source of knowledge about osteoporosis. Conclusion: The awareness level for osteoporosis in our study is moderate; lower family income and education level were risk factors for lower awareness. Television or radio health programs had the greatest contribution to osteoporosis awareness.

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı osteoporoz bilgi ve öz-etkililik düzeyleri ile ilişkili faktörlerin değerlendirilmesidir. Gereç ve Yöntem: Çalışma İskenderun Halk Eğitim Merkezi kurslarına katılan 19-60 yaş grubu 419 kadın ile yürütülmüştür. Osteoporoz bilgi düzeyi ölçeği (OKT) ve Osteoporoz öz-etkililik ölçeğini (OSS) kapsayan anket yüz yüze görüşme yöntemi ile uygulanmış, vücut ağırlığı ve boy uzunluğu ölçümleri tekniklerine uygun olarak yapılmıştır. Bulgular: Toplam OKT puanları yaşı >23 yıl olanlarda ≤23 yıl olanlara kıyasla daha yüksektir. Lisans mezunlarının toplam OKT puanları okuryazarlara kıyasla 12,9 kat daha yüksektir. OSS-egzersiz puanları serbest meslek sahibi kadınlarda ev hanımlarına kıyasla 2,4 kat daha yüksektir. OKT ve OSS toplam puanları, OKT-beslenme ve OSS-kalsiyum, OKT-egzersiz ve OSS-egzersiz puanları arasında ilişki saptanmıştır. Sonuç: İskenderun Halk Eğitim Merkezi kurslarına katılan kadınların osteoporoz bilgi ve öz-etkililik düzeyleri düşüktür. Yaş, eğitim düzeyi ve meslek osteoporoz bilgi ve öz-etkililik düzeylerini etkileyen önemli demografik faktörlerdir. Çok merkezli, kalsiyum alım miktarı ve fiziksel aktivite düzeylerinin değerlendirileceği daha ileri çalışmalara ihtiyaç vardır.Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the levels of osteoporosis knowledge and self-efficacy and the related factors. Materials and Methods:The study was conducted with 419 women aged between 19 and 60 years who attended the courses provided by Iskenderun Public Education Center. A questionnaire including the osteoporosis knowledge test (OKT) and osteoporosis self-efficacy scale (OSES) scores was applied by face to face interview method, the weight and height measurements were performed in accordance with the techniques. Results: The women older than 23 years of age had higher total OKT scores than the women younger than 23 years. The total OKT scores of the women with bachelor's degree were 12.9 times higher than those of unschooled literate women. The OSES-exercise scores of selfemployed women were 2.4 times higher than those of housewives. A relationship was determined between the OKT and OSES total scores, OKT-nutrition and OSES-calcium, and OKT-exercise and OSES-exercise scores. Conclusion: Women participating in İskenderun Public Education Center courses have low levels of osteoporosis knowledge and self-efficacy. Age, level of education, and occupation are important demographic factors affecting these levels. Further multicenter studies are needed to evaluate calcium intake and physical activity levels.

Background and Aims: The awareness of osteoporosis is essential of treatment. We investigated the awareness of osteoporosis in the patients with postmenopausal women in the region of Northeastern Anatolia, Turkey. Methods: Two hundred forty postmenopausal women were included into this study. We detected the age of menopause, the consciousness of osteoporosis, dual x-ray absorptiometry reports, habits of regular walking, drinking of milk, used to calcium and vitamin D supplementation or any antiosteoporotic medicine. Statistical analysis was made by SPSS-20 and data were expressed as mean, standard deviation, minimum-maximum and percent (%). Results: The average age of menopause was 11.7 ± 8.3 years. 90.5% were have the awareness of osteoporosis in the patients with postmenopausal. 71.6% had DXA reports and the percentage of regular consumption of vitamin D and calcium were 60.5%. Unfortunately, the habits of regular walking (5 km or 10.000 steps per day), the regular consumption of milk (1.0 L per day) and used to any drugs for osteoporosis were low, respectively 23.4%, 0.5%, and 9.4%. Conclusions: In our study the awareness of osteoporosis among the postmenopausal women were high. Unfortunately, the percentage of prevention and therapeutic intervention for postmenopausal osteoporosis were low. This condition may improve with the effort of health personals and used to media canals..
