Awareness and knowledge of allergens: A need and a challenge to assure a safe and healthy consumption of small fruits

Abstract: Food allergy is a widespread phenomenon: An estimated 1-2% of the population suffers from some type of food allergy. Fruits and vegetables are considered among the most important elicitors of food allergy. Berry fruits rich in phenolic compounds including flavonols, flavones and anthocyanins have recently gained increasing interest due to their possible beneficial effects on human health. However, they may harbour a series of allergenic proteins that cause discomfort or even represent serious threats to certai… Show more

“…Of all investigated cultivars, the highest Fra a 1 level was determined in Florika F. × vescana obtained by cross-breeding F. × ananassa × F. vesca . Due to crossing of cultivated strawberries with wild species nutritional properties may altered as well as unfavorable compounds such as food allergen [ 37 ]. Overall, the colorless fruited cultivars showed varying Fra a 1 levels between 0.67 and 2.13 µg/g FW verifying recent results, that white-fruited strawberries do not always show reduced Fra a 1 levels [ 12 ].…”

“…The apple's domestication led to thousands of cultivars with different properties in colour, size, taste and allergen content. Different apple cultivars differ in their Mal d1 content, but Mal d1 content also varies within the apple increasing from flesh to peel and stem near peel . Previous studies associated high Mal d 1 content with an increased allergenic potential .…”

“…There is little known about the effects of integrated farming systems on strawberry fruit quality. However, it should be remembered that the consumption of strawberries brings the risk of food allergies [15]. During the last decades, the prevalence of allergies has increased drastically, whereby 3-4% of the adult population and up to 6% of children are affected by food allergies [16].…”
