Awareness, acceptability, and use of female condoms among university students in Nigeria: implications for STI/HIV prevention

Abstract: This study highlights significant challenges in the use of female condoms among university students. These include unavailability, high cost, and difficulty with insertion. Therefore, deliberate efforts using social marketing strategies, appropriate youth-friendly publicity, and peer education must be exerted to provide affordable female condoms and promote usage; such efforts should target vulnerable youths in Nigerian tertiary institutions.

“…For example, university students in Nigeria reported that a key reason for FC use was the sense of empowerment that the method afforded. 97 FC provision in Cambodia reinforced FSWs’ intentions to share experiences and support each other to adopt new methods. 127 In Mozambique, nearly 5,000 women have met in FC “empowerment groups” to discuss negotiation tactics with partners and the correct use of FCs, including basic education about women’s bodies.…”

“…[15][16][17] Studies conducted among general university students' population in Nigeria also showed higher rates of sexual activity. 18 The proportion is however higher than those conducted among female secondary school students. 19 This is probably related to the ages of the students.…”

“…Women are disproportionately affected by the epidemic and account for 31% of new infections and such rates are three times higher than in men. Tobin-West et al ( 2014 ) revealed that at the end of 2014, an estimated 36.9 million people were living with HIV globally, of which 34.3 million were adults and women accounted for 17.4 million. Botswana continues to have one of the highest rates of HIV prevalence in the world.…”

“…Since the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, condoms have been promoted as most efficient. In 1993, the United States Food and Drug Administration approved the female condom as a safe and efficient contraceptive and protective device (Peters, Van Driel & Jansen 2010 ; Tobin-West et al 2014 ). In response to women’s disproportionate disease burden, much effort in HIV prevention research has been focused on the identification of female-initiated barrier methods (Montgomery et al 2012 ).…”
