AVS-M Audio: Algorithm and Implementation

Abstract: In recent years, AVS-M audio standard targeting at wireless network and mobile multimedia applications has been developed by China Audio and Video Coding Standard Workgroup. AVS-M demonstrates a similar framework with AMR-WB+. This paper analyses the whole framework and the core algorithms of AVS-M with an emphasis on the implementation of the real-time encoder and decoder on DSP platform. A comparison between the performances of AVS-M and AMR-WB+ is also given.

“…Usually, it is not transmitted to the decoder side, but is replaced by the decoded LF excitation signal because of the correlation between and HF and LF. Figure illustrates the generation process of HF signals in AVS P10 . AVS P10 is a codec for mobile speech and audio in China, and the goal of this paper is to improve its perception quality of coding.…”

“…As the basic principle of the LPC‐based BWE is based on the speech generation model, this approach is widely used in speech coding . However, because the lower frequencies of voiced speech signals generally exhibit a stronger harmonic structure than the higher frequencies, the duplication of LF excitation should cause too much harmonic components on the generated HF excitation signals, which should bring out the objectionable, “buzzy”—sounding artifacts …”

“…[1,2,3,4,5], which is an important research branch in array signal processing. Many 2D-DOA estimation algorithms have sprung up in recent years in order to improve the performance of angle estimation, which include the two dimensional multiple signal classification(2D MUSIC) algorithm [6], the 2D Unitary estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance techniques (ESPRIT) algorithm [7], the modified 2D-ESPRIT algorithm [8], the matrix pencil method [9], the maximum likelihood method [10,11], the parallel factor (PARAFAC) algorithm [12], and so on [13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20]. However, those 2D-DOA estimation algorithms are confronted with the problem of the high computational complexity generally and they are very difficult to apply in engineering practice.…”

“…The goal of this paper is to improve the sound quality of China AVS-M (Audio and Video coding Standard for Mobile , submitted as Audio Video coding Standard Part 10: Mobile Audio and Speech Codec [6], the AVS-M codec is named as AVS P10 following). AVS-M is a low bitrate audio coding standard proposed for the next generation mobile communication system for China.…”
