Avoiding Resistance Limitations in High-Performance Transparent Supercapacitor Electrodes Based on Large-Area, High-Conductivity PEDOT:PSS Films

Abstract: This work describes the potential of thin, spray-deposited, large-area poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly(styrene-4-sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) conducting polymer films for use as transparent supercapacitor electrodes. To facilitate this, we provide a detailed explanation of the factors limiting the performance of such electrodes. These films have a very low optical conductivity of σop = 24 S/cm (at 550 nm), crucial for this application, and a reasonable volumetric capacitance of C V = 41 F/cm3. Secondary dopi… Show more

“…At higher scan rates the current begins to saturate due to either limitations associated with diffusions of ions 45,71 or the resistance of the electrode. 72 This graph shows clearly that electrodes made from smaller nanosheets result in higher currents. The volumetric capacitance, CV, of the electrodes can be found from the equation:…”

“…Here the nanosheet concentration of m-WS 2 , m-WS 2 -Au stock and purified m-WS 2 -Au (both with AuCl 3 :WS 2 = 4.5) were adjusted to 0.1 g/L by the addition of water. Equal volumes of the dispersions were deposited (using conditions described elsewhere 50 ) onto pyrolytic carbon substrates. Linear sweep voltammograms were obtained (at 5 mV/s in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 ) from 0 to −0.6 V vs. a Gaskatel-supplied Hydroflex H 2 -reference electrode.…”
