“…It was proven to be successful in the differentiation between primary and secondary infection among different subjects especially pregnant women. This was the objective of a number of researches (14,19,39,41,42). Three laboratories followed pregnancy outcomes to identify cases of congenital CMV infection; all found a strong association between low CMV IgG avidity during pregnancy and increased risk of in utero transmission (14,43,44).…”

“…Three laboratories followed pregnancy outcomes to identify cases of congenital CMV infection; all found a strong association between low CMV IgG avidity during pregnancy and increased risk of in utero transmission (14,43,44). The Paris and Bologna groups reported that all women who had CMV-infected offspring exhibited low IgG avidity (14,42,43). Similarly, one paper from the Brussels group reported that 89% of transmitting women exhibited low IgG avidity (44).…”

“…Immune complexes are particularly formed for antigens that are community-born and to which antibody titers are routinely present, including HCMV. 14 Antigen targeting to specific receptors, including Fcgammareceptors (Fc␥R) directs antigen presentation toward the class I MHC or the class II MHC presentation pathway. 3,[15][16][17] Here, we addressed the possible role of Fc␥R-mediated antigen targeting as a mechanism within human BDCA-3 ϩ DCs.…”

“…The avidity indices used to discriminate between low (< 50%) and high (> 60%) IgG avidity in our in-house avidity assay were similar to values published by other investigators. BODÉUS et al 4 , who used an avidity test with 8 M urea as the dissociating agent to screen serum samples from patients with a recent primary or long-term HCMV infection, showed that an avidity index < 50% corresponded to a recent primary infection, whereas an avidity index > 65% was highly suggestive of a past infection. GRANGEOT-KEROS et al 9 also used an avidity test with 8 M urea as the dissociating agent to screen serum samples from pregnant women in different stages of HCMV infection.…”

“…Based on the observation that antibody avidity gradually increases after exposure to an immunogen 8,23 , several reports have shown that the avidity of IgG antibodies can be used as a marker for distinguishing recent primary from long-term infections, including HCMV infections [2][3][4]7,9,16 .…”
