“…One possibility is that they are derived from non-defective lymphomagenic viruses. Defective viruses are often found in the presence of uncloned viruses and even cloned non-defective sarcoma viruses can generate transformation-defective viruses during replication in vitro (Vogt, 1971 ;Lai et al, 1973). The A8 virus probably originated in this way.…”

“…Later, trans formation-defective (td) mutants, having the same subgroup specificity as the original transforming virus, were isolated from cloned stocks of RSV [Dougherty and Ras-müssen, 1964;Hanafusa and Hanafusa, 1966;Duff and Vogt, 1969;Vogt, 1971]. Duesberg andVogt [1970,1973] and Lai et al [1973] provided clear evidence that the genomic RNA isolated from Id mutants was smaller than genomic RNA isolated from the paren tal transforming RSV. In this way it was shown that the deleted portion of the viral genome, comprising 10-20% of the genomic RNA, represents the genetic information in volved in cell transformation.…”

“…Previous experiments showed that the FB77 genome differs from that of B77, and that some genetic differences in retroviruses are accompanied by changes in the size of the RNA molecule (15,16). It was of interest to compare the FB77 RNA with that of tile parental B77 t~NA.…”
