Avian Speciation in the Pantepui: The Case of the Roraiman Antbird (Percnostola [Schistocichla] “Leucostigma” Saturata)

Abstract: Abstract. We document the first records for Guyana of Roraiman Antbird (Percnostola [Schistocichla] ''leucostigma'' saturata), an endemic of the tepui highlands of southeastern Venezuela, northern Brazil and western Guyana. This form is well differentiated from nominate leucostigma (Spot-winged Antbird) of the Guianan lowlands in morphology, vocalizations, and genetics, and replaces it both altitudinally and ecologically. The two taxa are distributed parapatrically on the continuously forested northeastern slo… Show more

“…A similar case of sympatric/parapatric speciation occurred in antbirds (Thamnophilidae, Percnostola) of northern South America (Braun et al 2005). The roraiman antbird Percostola saturata , endemic to tepuis of southeastern Venezuela and northern Brazil, is elevationally parapatric to its more widespread lowland sister, the spotted‐winged antbird Percnostola leucostigma .…”

“…Those cases in which molecular and phenotypic data have been used to revise species limits in previously polytypic tropical species, intraspecific distances have dropped to temperate zone values. For example, when Schistocichla ( Percnostola) leucostigma was divided into S. leucostigma and S. saturata, intraspecific distance was reduced from 9% to less than 1% (ATPase 6+ND2+ND3, Braun et al [57]), and the taxonomic split of Capito niger into four species reduced mean intraspecific divergence from 6% to again less than 1% (cyt b + COI, Armenta et al [58]). …”

“…Although the configuration proposed here is consistent with the boundaries defined by Cracraft (1985), this author never mentioned the Rio Branco or the savannas as important barriers. West of the Rio Branco, Cracraft (1985) identified the Pantepui area of endemism, an area with a unique montane avifauna that is not closely related to that of the surrounding lowland forests (Mayr & Phelps, 1967; Braun et al. , 2005).…”
