Avian Pathogenic Escherichia coli and Clostridium perfringens: Challenges in No Antibiotics Ever Broiler Production and Potential Solutions

Abstract: United States is the largest producer and the second largest exporter of broiler meat in the world. In the US, broiler production is largely converting to antibiotic-free programs which has caused an increase in morbidity and mortality within broiler farms. Escherichia coli and Clostridium perfringens are two important pathogenic bacteria readily found in the broiler environment and result in annual billion-dollar losses from colibacillosis, gangrenous dermatitis, and necrotic enteritis. The broiler industry i… Show more

“…Escherichia coli is known to be a Gram-negative, facultative anaerobe bacterium belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family [ 264 ]. Certain E. coli strains, known as “avian pathogenic E. coli ” (APEC) are responsible for colibacillosis, one of the most important causes of chicken mortality in the poultry industry worldwide [ 265 ].…”

“…The severity of the disease depends on the host’s health status, predisposing factors, and virulence of the E. coli strain. In recent report estimated that 30% of broiler flocks In the US are affected by subclinical colibacillosis [ 13 ]. E. coli normally found In gastrointestinal of broiler chickens, mucosal surfaces, and poultry environment [ 14 ].…”

“…Contemporary broiler chickens are characterised by a gradually increased growth rate but are also more susceptible to different disorders and diseases, including but not limited to alimentary tract diseases, such as colibacteriosis [ 1 ]. Herbs deserve special attention because they have become more prevalent in feed mixes and supplementation preparations due to the content of valuable biologically active substances, e.g., essential oils (EOs) [ 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 ].…”

“…Intensive farming means exposing broiler chickens to stress resulting from feed changing, transport and stocking density [ 9 , 10 ]. The factors mentioned above may negatively impact the humoral and cellular immunological response, which means that such pathogenic bacteria can colonise the broiler chickens’ alimentary tract as Salmonella, Escherichia coli , Campylobacter jejuni and Clostridium perfringens genera [ 1 , 9 ]. Colibacteriosis, being one of the most often diagnosed diseases in slaughter chickens, is specified as being among the biggest problems in contemporary animal production [ 1 ].…”
