Embodied conversational agents (ECAs) are virtual characters using verbal and non-verbal communication for Human-machine interaction. The aim of our research is to create an ECA-based user interface for assistive technologies targeting older adults with cognitive impairment. Our design methodology is a co-design living lab approach, collecting design guidelines through questionnaires, focus groups and user trials.In this paper, we report on the results of the first phase of this iterative design process. We developed Louise, a semi-automatic ECA prototype that aims to compensate, through attention monitoring, for a user's attentional disorders by performing autonomous prompting, i.e., calling the user to regain his or her attention in case he or she got distracted. We evaluated the performance of Louise with a group of experts in assistive technologies and collected their feedback. Louise's simple attention estimator is more than 80% accurate. The system got quite positive reviews from users.

We present the first experiment we conducted to evaluate the attention monitoring performance of Louise, following a Wizard of Oz method, during the interactions with a cohort of 8 elderly users in a day hospital environment. Louise is a new, semi-automatic prototype of an Embodied Conversational Agent (ECA), a virtual character interacting with users through social-like communication, adapted to the special needs of older adults with cognitive impairment; it is intended to ultimately provide assistance in their activities of daily living. We recorded and analyzed both videos of the conversation-like interactions and Louise's tracking data. In our experiment, Louise's attention estimation algorithm achieved about 80% accuracy; moreover, in almost all cases, the user's attention was successfully recaptured by Louise after a planned, experimenter-induced distraction. These results are in line with what was observed in previous experiments involving only younger adults, thus suggesting that attention measurement tools embedded in cognitive prostheses will not need to be adapted to elderly patients. Finally, to gain further insights on conversation management and provide evidence-based suggestions for future work, we performed an anthropological analysis of the whole experiment.

The objective of this work is of improving the efficacy, acceptance, adaptability and overall performance of Human-Machine Interaction (HMI) applications using a context-based approach. In HMI, we aim to define a general human model that may lead to principles and algorithms allowing more natural and effective interaction between humans and artificial agents. This is paramount for applications in the field of Active and Assisted Living (AAL). The challenge of user acceptance is of vital importance for future solutions, and still one of the major reasons for reluctance to adopt cyber-physical systems in this domain. Our hypothesis is that, we can overcome limitations of current interaction functionalities by integrating contextual information to improve algorithms accuracy when performing under very different conditions and to adapt interfaces and interaction patterns according user intentions and emotional states.
