The various studies on the manipulation of the estrous cycle culminated in the development of estrous and ovulation synchronization protocols, to the point of defining an optimum moment for artificial insemination. The induction of ovulation is a primordial part for the determination of the moment of the TAI, so to study which hormones and how they behave allows a better understanding of this physiological process and, to manipulate it efficiently. The aim of the present study was to compare the use of estradiol benzoate (EB) and cypionate (ECP) as ovulation inducer in Girolando cows submitted to Timed Artificial Insemination (TAI). Ovulations of 108 Girolando cows were synchronized and the initial day of treatment, recorded as D0, which was when the animals received an intravaginal device containing 1g of progestogen and an intramuscular application (im) of 2mg of EB. After 8 days (D8), the device was removed and 500μg of cloprostenol (im) was administered to all females. Then, the animals were randomly divided into two treatments: BG Group (n = 52) and CG Group (n = 56). The CG animals received 1mg of ECP (im) as the ovulation inducer at the time of device removal, while BG Group cows received 1mg of EB (im) 24 h later (D9). TAI occurred at D10. After device removal, ultrasound evaluations were performed every 12 h up to ovulation. The following reproductive parameters were evaluated: interval from intravaginal device removal to ovulation - IDO (hours); interval from ovulation to TAI-IOT (hours); diameter of the largest follicle at intravaginal device removal (mm); maximum diameter of the DF (mm) at D10; the dominant follicle growth rate (mm/day); synchronization rate - SR (%); ovulation rate - OR (%) and PR - pregnancy rate (%). Only the ovulation rate presented a statistical difference (p<0.05). In conclusion, despite the ovulation rate difference, both estradiol esters administered were effective and presented similar pregnancy rates in Girolando cows submitted to TAI.

This study aimed to verify the reproductive efficiency of beef cows treated with recombinant bovine somatotropin (rbST). Study 1, Bos indicus cows were distributed (three groups). The control group (CG) was subjected: on day zero (d0), the animals received a CIDR and oestradiol benzoate (EB); on (d8, CIDR was removed, and PGF2α and oestradiol cypionate (EC) were administered; on d10, timed Artificial Insemination (TAI) was performed; on d45, pregnancy diagnosis was made. The rbST on d0 group (bST0G) was subjected to an identical protocol as CG, except for the addition of 250 mg rbST on d0. The rbST on d8 group (bST8G) was subjected to the same protocol as bST0G, except that the rbST was administered on d8 rather. In study 2, the animals followed the same design which was used in Bos taurus cows. The follicular growth rate (FGR) was calculated between d8 and d10. In study 1, pregnancy/artificial insemination (P/AI) did not differ among the treatments. FGR in bST8G was higher than in other groups. In study 2, bST0G showed higher Pregnancy/Artificial Insemination (P/AI) (p < .05) when compared with other groups. bST0G showed a different FGR (p < .0001) than the other groups. In conclusion, rbST (Bos indicus cows) did not increase P/AI, but it did promote follicular growth when administered on d8; the rbST administered on d0 improved P/AI (p < .05) and the FGR in Bos taurus cows.

Maturação oocitária é uma das etapas da produção in vitro de embriões (PIVE) nas espécies domésticas, na qual as fêmeas bovinas e caninas são submetidas a diferentes métodos para obtenção de complexos cumulus oócitos (CCOs), in vivo e ou in vitro. Após a aquisição desses CCOs, os mesmos são rastreados e avaliados inicialmente quanto às características morfológicas, podendo ser submetidos à testes mais precisos, principalmente no desenvolvimento de pesquisa. Neste sentido, marcadores de viabilidade no decorrer da maturação e ao término da mesma podem ser utilizados. Esta etapa executada com alto controle de qualidade visa índices de maturação compatíveis e satisfatórios aos processos de fertilização in vitro (FIV), os quais consistem no próximo passo para PIVE. A reprodução assistida (RA) nas espécies abordadas apresenta objetivos comuns quanto à maturação oocitária, no entanto, podem ser destinas a fins diferentes quanto a aplicabilidade das técnicas e preservação do material genético. Nos cães, utilizados como modelo para PIVE de canídeos em extinção, o processo de maturação além de fisiologicamente distinto das demais espécies domésticas, tem um período de 72 horas, o que faz desta espécie um grande desafio nas taxas de maturação oocitária e subsequente PIVE quando comparadas com os bovinos.
