Objective: To determine the profile of children from 6 to 12 years of age, in relation to anxiety towards dental treatment and evaluate the main factors that trigger anxiety in this population. Methods: The sample was composed of 200 children with an average age of 8.5 years who attended the Clinic of the School of Dentistry of the Federal University of Campina Grande and the Basic Healthcare Units of the municipality of Patos, Paraíba, Brazil between June 2015 and May 2016. Anxiety was assessed using the Dental Anxiety Scale and the Venham Picture Test. The Chi-Square test and Fisher’s exact test were used to explore the level of significance of the associations between the variables Results: Anxiety was observed in the majority of children (Dental Anxiety Scale - 89% and Venham Picture Test - 70.5%) and the predominant levels were low to moderate. The child´s age group was significantly associated with anxiety (p=0.014) by the Venham Picture Test, while gender did not present this correlation. Anxiety was influenced by all the factors studied: making the appointment, waiting room, rotary instrument and periodontal scaling. Conclusion: The majority of children presented anxiety and the trigger factors: making the appointment, waiting room, rotary instrument and periodontal scaling contributed considerably to its development.

A situação de tratamento odontológico em geral está relacionada à ansiedade e ao stress, assim, a dor, os aspectos fisiológicos e psicológicos envolvidos no tratamento podem ser avaliados pelos pacientes. Diante disso, o presente estudo tem como propósito avaliar o nível de ansiedade dos pacientes submetidos ao tratamento odontológico na Clínica Escola de Odontologia da Universidade Federal de Campina Grande, campus de Patos. Este estudo foi do tipo transversal, observacional, adotando como estratégia de coleta de dados o questionário específico. A amostra foi composta por 134 pacientes, a coleta de dados foi realizada por um pesquisador, que coletou as informações através de dois questionários. O primeiro questionário foi composto por questões de identificação (gênero, idade, frequência de consultas ao dentista e procedimento odontológico que causa desconforto). O segundo questionário por questões específicas na identificação do grau de ansiedade dos pacientes ao tratamento odontológico utilizando a escala DAS (Dental Anxiety Scale). Após coletados, os dados foram trabalhados pela estatística descritiva e submetidos ao teste estatístico Qui-quadrado (p0,05). A prevalência de ansiedade foi de 87,3%, sendo o nível moderado o mais prevalente (39,6%). Dentre os procedimentos odontológicos que causam mais incômodo, o motor de alta rotação foi citado por 40,1% dos entrevistados. Ao associar a presença ou ausência da ansiedade com gênero, não foi encontrado diferença estatisticamente significativa (p0,05). Desta forma, conclui-se que a prevalência de ansiedade foi alta e a aquisição de um conhecimento mais profundo do sentimento de ansiedade são de extrema importância na execução dos procedimentos no consultório odontológico.Descritores: Assistência Odontológica; Estresse Psicológico; Medicina do Comportamento.ReferênciasBottan ER, Oglio JD, Araújo SM. Objective: This study aimed to report a case series on the use of audiovisual distraction eyeglasses in children during dental care. Methods: The influence of the distraction tool on the children’s heart rate frequency and dental care experience was further investigated. The study children had their heart rate recorded during three clinical appointments and underwent the following procedures: 1) anamnesis; 2) modified atraumatic restorative treatment with the child wearing audiovisual eyeglasses; and 3) modified atraumatic restorative treatment without the use of audiovisual eyeglasses. The interval between appointments was up to one week. The heart rate was measured using a pulse oximeter, and a post-treatment questionnaire was applied after the three appointments. The sample consisted of five children aged 4 to 7 years attending the Pediatric Dental Clinics of the State University of Paraíba. Results: While wearing the audiovisual eyeglasses, the children’s individual heart rates were lower in the second dental visit as compared to the first and third ones. The post-treatment questionnaire revealed a preference for the use of audiovisual distraction eyeglasses as the children felt more comfortable, pleased, and had a reduced pain perception and anxiety. Conclusion: The heart rate decrease observed herein suggests that audiovisual eyeglasses may contribute to reducing anxiety during dental care.
