2013 is the year that Couto Maia Hospital (HCMaia) will celebrate 160 years since its founding. To celebrate this anniversary a research was performed in order to identify the scientific production of the hospital during the last 60 years , specifically regarding the scientific papers published nationally and internationally in recognized medical journals, conference abstracts, as well as thesis and dissertations. Moreover, this study also covers chapters of books published by the doctors in the hospital manuals of conduct. The sources for these recognized works are the libraries of HCMaia, Gonzalo Muniz Research Center (CPGM) within FioCruz Foundation, the library from the Medicine College at UFBA (Fameb), the Virtual Health Library (BIREME) and the Latin |American and Caribbean Literature in Social Sciences (LILACS). Furthermore, most of the published works are resultant from the most common diseases in the hospital, along with the names of professors and researchers, who had their Curriculum Vitae analyzed. The analysis of this bibliographic survey shows 54 chapters of manuals and 263 papers; 78 published articles, with 55 (70.5%) in national journals and 23 (29.5%) in international journals; 155 published abstracts, 142 (91.6%) in national conferences and 13 (8.4%) in international conferences; and 22 (73.4%) graduate thesis and 8 (26.6%) dissertations. The Analysis shows that the scientific production has increased in the last 20 years (1991-2011) with 207 papers (78.9%). Most of the published material regards the subject meningitis-meningoencephalitis, with 115 (43.7%) of the papers, and leptospirosis 79 (30.0%). Although this survey is underestimated by the number of scientific publications found, Couto Maia Hospital proves to be an effective source of great value for research in the field of infectious diseases.
