ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to assess the in vitro cytotoxicity of acrylic resins of different colors over time.MethodsSpecimens were divided into 4 groups (n = 6) according to the color of the acrylic resin (Orto Class, Clássico, Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil): Group 1: clear acrylic resin; group 2: pink acrylic resin; group 3: blue acrylic resin and group 4: green acrylic resin. All specimens were fabricated according to the mass manipulation technique and submitted to mechanical polishing protocol. The control was performed with an amalgam specimen (C+), a glass specimen (C-) and cell control (CC). Specimens were immersed in Minimum Eagle's Medium (MEM) and incubated for 24 h at 37ºC. The extracts from the experimental material were filtered and mixed with L929 fibroblast. Cytotoxicity was evaluated at 4 different times, 24, 48, 72 and 168 h. After contact, cells were incubated for 24 h and added to 100 µ of 0.01% neutral red dye. The cells were incubated for 3 h for pigment incorporation and fixed. Cells viability was determined by a spectroscopic (BioTek, Winooski, Vermont, USA) with a 492-nm wavelength λ=492 nm).ResultsThere were no statistical differences between the experimental groups and the CC and C- groups.ConclusionClear, pink, blue and green self-curing acrylic resins fabricated by means of the mass manipulation technique and mechanically polished are not cytotoxic. Neither the pigment added to the self-curing acrylic resin nor the factor of time influenced the cytotoxicity of the material.

Periodontal diseases have several causes, amongst them, by foreign bodies. In this case report, an 11-year-old child who lived in a rural area and has never been treated by a dentist presented an extensive horizontal bone loss and edema on the region of tooth 44. The diagnosis of foreign body was obtained after biopsy, since an elastic band around the middle of the root tooth was found. The elastic band was not radiopaque, and the patient did not inform that she found the elastic band on the floor of the school and introduced the tooth by herself. Based on the case reported, it is concluded that anamnesis and clinical and radiographic examination are fundamental strategies to obtain the diagnosis, but sometimes, especially in children, there may be inconsistencies that can be elucidated by a biopsy.

Os elásticos representam uma ferramenta importante nos tratamentos ortodônticos e ortopédicos e tem como principal característica a versatilidade em sua aplicação. Para ser eficiente, requer que o profissional realize um adequado planejamento, conhecendo seus efeitos e indicações precisas. Desta forma, o objetivo deste artigo é apresentar uma revisão sobre os tipos e as propriedades dos elásticos usados em Ortodontia, abordando suas vantagens, desvantagens, indicações e limitações quanto ao seu uso. Para a obtenção dos artigos científicos, foram utilizadas Oas bases de dados PubMed, MEDLINE, SciELO, LILACs e Google Acadêmico, além de livros de Ortodontia que abordassem o tema. Foram empregadas as palavras-chaves consultadas nos Descritores em Ciências da Saúde (DECS): Elastômeros, Terapêutica, Ortodontia e os termos equivalentes em inglês, Elastomers, Therapeutics, Orthodontics sendo selecionados artigos, dissertações e teses publicados nos últimos 15 anos (2002-2017), além de artigos clássicos da literatura. Não foram incluídos artigos de relatos de casos clínicos. Os artigos revisados mostraram que os elásticos são capazes de gerar forças leves e contínuas sendo uma ferramenta útil para fechamento de espaços, retração de caninos, correção de más oclusões de Classe II e Classe III, bem como na intercuspidação oclusal na fase de finalização. Existem vários fatores, inerentes ao material, que influenciam as propriedades mecânicas dos elásticos, como a perda de elasticidade, quantidade de força dissipada, composição e qualidade do material. Alguns fatores locais também são capazes de influencias sua ação, entre eles: composição da saliva, variações do pH, pigmentos, dieta alimentar, além de efeitos dos movimentos mandibulares. Com base na revisão da literatura, concluiu-se que, com o avanço tecnológico e desenvolvimento dos materiais dentários, os elásticos utilizados em Ortodontia tiveram suas propriedades avaliadas e melhoradas, de forma a aumentar sua aplicabilidade como auxiliares durante os tratamentos ortodônticos e ortopédicos. Entretanto, o ortodontista deve compreender as propriedades dos elásticos de borracha e sintéticos, bem como suas limitações e riscos, para alcançar resultados clínicos mais satisfatórios.
