Available Pathways for Operationalizing Circular Economy into the Olive Oil Supply Chain: Mapping Evidence from a Scoping Literature Review

Abstract: Circular economy (CE) is increasingly seen as a promising paradigm for transitioning agri-food systems towards more sustainable models of production and consumption, enabling virtuous and regenerative biological metabolisms based on strategies of eco-efficiency and eco-effectiveness. This contribution seeks to provide a theoretical and empirical framework for operationalizing the CE principles into the olive oil supply chain, that plays a central role in the agroecological systems of the Mediterranean region. … Show more

“…Therefore, it is of importance to consider all potential pathways for circular economy in the olive oil supply chain. Stempfle et al (2021) mapped these potential pathways based on an intensive literature review study.…”

“…A range of interesting valorization options for such byproducts have been already proposed, including: recovering bioactive compounds; producing biofuel or bioenergy; manufacturing sustainable building materials; fertilizing or irrigating soil; practicing regenerative agriculture; feeding livestock; producing polymeric biomaterials; providing sorbents for aqueous effluents; synthetizing bio-fertilizers or biostimulants (Stempfle et al, 2021;Chojnacka et al, 2022). However, material recirculation, which is at the foundation of CE models, is not always feasible because of several technical and/or economic reasons (Donner and Radić, 2021).…”

“…The selected firm is in the Apulia region, which is the most important olive oil producing area in Italy, accounting for about 25% of olive-growing farms, 33% of olive groves, and 50% of olive oil production at the national level (data from the Agricultural Census ISTAT, 2011;ISMEA, 2021). Energetic valorization was elected as the circular pathway to focus on, since it is thematically dominant in scientific literature inquiring about the implementation of CE into the olive oil supply chain (Stempfle et al, 2021). Besides, energy crisis and independence from fossil fuels have become more and more relevant topics as also demonstrated by the recent geopolitical events (Russia-Ukraine crisis) that have highlighted the great vulnerability of the global energy supply chain due to the propagation of trade-related risks and price volatility, and the need to maintain this supply chain resilient using long-term approaches such as the recycling and circular strategy (Sun, 2022).…”

“…Therefore, analyzing all possible circular economic paths in the olive oil supply chain is essential. Stempfle et al ( 7 ) delineated these probable paths based on a thorough literature assessment. In this context, olive mill wastewater (OMWW) varies from 1.2 to 1.8 m 3 per tons of olives ( 8 ).…”
