Available names for Rangifer (Mammalia, Artiodactyla, Cervidae) species and subspecies

Abstract: Advancements in molecular and phylogenetic analysis have revealed the need for greater taxonomic resolution since Rangifer (Reindeer and caribou: Cervidae) was last revised in 1961. Recent literature shows that many of the subspecies and several species synonymised out of existence are, in fact, valid, some names have been misapplied, and new subspecies-level clades are in need of description. This paper reviews available names for recently defined ecotypes of reindeer and caribou in compliance with ICZN rules… Show more

“…This indicates that reindeer herding, and pastoralism have been based on animals of same genetic origin in a very large geographical area in the northern Russian territory among different northern indigenous societies. As pointed out by 31 , these reindeer breeds belong to "Siberian reindeer" group of reindeer (R. t. sibiricus). In contrast to our finding, genotyping of limited number of autosomal microsatellites in the Russian reindeer breeds 32,33 clustered the Nenets and Even reindeer to different genetic sub-groups.…”

“…Rangifer tarandus, referred to as reindeer in Eurasia and caribou in North America, is an ideal species with which to study the impact of glacial cycles on species distributions 16 – 18 . Its current distribution spreads from the High Arctic (including Svalbard) to the tundra and taiga regions of northern Europe, Siberia, North America and Greenland 2 , 18 21 .…”

“…Reindeer or caribou (Artiodactyla, Cervidae, Rangifer tarandus) are deer species within the genus Rangifer [1]. Reindeer are the only semi [2] or fully [3] domesticated deer species on a large scale worldwide, and the only deer species with a circumpolar distribution [3].…”
