Available Lepidopteran Insect Cell Lines

Abstract: This chapter lists the known cell lines from Lepidoptera, largely based on previous compilations of insect cell lines published by W. Fred Hink. More than 320 lines from 65 species are listed. The official designation is given for each cell line as well as the species, tissue source, and, when known, the susceptibilities to baculoviruses.

“…Subsequently, other uses emerged for members of Baculoviridae owing to (i) the facilities offered by genetic engineering through viral-DNA manipulation (Luckow et al 1993), (ii) the natural condition that the viral genome is infective per se in host cells (Rohrmann 2019), and (iii) the availability of more than 320 insect cell lines capable of multiplying baculoviruses under in vitro conditions (Lynn and Harrison 2016). Unlike the circumstance in the agricultural sector, most of these new applications derive from a single alphabaculovirus, AcMNPV.…”

“…At 24 h post transfection, the medium was replaced with fresh medium containing 10 μg/mL puromycin and incubated for 2-3 weeks with occasional replacements. Clones of puromycin-resistant cells were isolated using the terminal dilution method (Lynn and Harrison, 2016). Wells containing cells were examined by fluorescence microscopy using a Nikon eclipse ti with a GFP filter.…”

“…The silkworm ( Bombyx mori ) is a model lepidopteran insect with many available research tools, including genome information, transgenic methods, and cell lines 15 17 . In this study, we aimed to develop a practical JHSI by establishing a JH screening system for HTS using a B. mori cell line, in which the JH signaling pathway had been characterized 18 22 .…”
