Availability of digital dermoscopy in daily practice dramatically reduces the number of excised melanocytic lesions: results from an observational study

Abstract: The reduction of unnecessary excisions when using digital dermoscopy compared with dermoscopy alone in our study suggests that access to digital dermoscopy offers a better management of pigmented lesions in daily practice. The high number of early lesions diagnosed by this technique confirms that its use is safe.

“…The numbers of melanomas were higher than those reported in the DEPIMELA study due to the false-negative melanomas having been excluded in the previous study due to a different endpoint [15]. All 168 melanoma patients were node negative on clinical examination.…”

“…Melanoma patients from the DEPIMELA (from "Dépistage" e detection, in French e and "Melanoma") study [15] were included in the present study. Briefly, the DEPIMELA study was conducted in 2009e2010, involving 36 volunteer dermatologists recruited from private and public hospital practices.…”

“…During the repeat examination, a new dermoscopic image is captured and the images are then compared side-by-side on a computer monitor to allow for detection of morphologic changes indicative of malignancy. This technique has been shown to reduce unnecessary excisions of benign lesions [40] and to allow detection of melanomas that lack diagnostic clinical or dermoscopic features at baseline. [41,42] Dermoscopic mole monitoring is used for flat non-palpable lesions only; raised lesions should never be monitored.…”
