Availability-Constrained Multipath Protection in Backbone Networks with Double-Link Failure

Abstract: Reliability is crucial for high speed backbone networks. Protection mechanisms are therefore critical in the design of infrastructure networks. This paper investigates a new multipath provisioning model with availability-guarantee on networks where events of up to two simultaneous link failures can occur. A service level agreement (SLA) which mandates service availability must be met even during network failure situations. We present a mathematical formulation to perform optimal capacity allocation in both GMP… Show more

“…Paper [15] adopted the log information of path state as the basis for routing and considered the path with highest statistics availability as the service channel. Papers [16][17][18] proposed A SPA based multipath routing mechanism by increasing the redundancy of resources to enhance the A SPA of the channel. Paper [19] proposed a primary-backup sharing routing mechanism in optical networks to improve the resource utilization in premise of ensuring the statistical availability.…”

“…In case of a failure on a service's primary path, this service will be switched to its backup path only if its ADT has been used up and the backup resources are currently not being used by any other service. 5 As services have reduced SLA Violation Risk on their primary paths, we expect less contention for the shared resources, and hence lower overall SLA violation ratio. Our hypothesis is verified in Section V.…”

“…In [4], the authors convert the availability of each link to its log, and then find the most "reliable" path in terms of path availability. In [5], the authors study an availability-constrained scheme for multipath provisioning. In [6], the authors propose an availability-aware routing scheme for optical networks with primary-backup sharing.…”
