Auxin production by the plant trypanosomatidPhytomonas serpensand auxin homoeostasis in infected tomato fruits

Abstract: S U M M A R YPreviously we have characterized the complete gene encoding a pyruvate decarboxylase (PDC)/indolepyruvate decarboxylase (IPDC) of Phytomonas serpens, a trypanosomatid highly abundant in tomato fruits. Phylogenetic analyses indicated that the clade that contains the trypanosomatid protein behaves as a sister group of IPDCs of γ-proteobacteria. Since IPDCs are key enzymes in the biosynthesis of the plant hormone indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), the ability for IAA production by P. serpens was investigate… Show more

“…It has yet to be shown whether Phytomonas infection leads to alteration of plant or insect host for enhanced transmission. However, emerging data suggests that Phytomonas serpens is able to produce auxin and thus may interfere with plant hormone signalling [ 66 ].…”

“…The fruit infected by the insects Phthia picta and Nezara viridula present yellowish spots that result in nutritional loss and; consequently, lead to commercial impracticability of the product (JANKEVICIUS et al, 1989). Phytomonas serpens is also attributed to the production of auxin, a class of phytohormones that ends up causing interference with the plant metabolism, thus affecting plant development (IENNE et al, 2014). Despite the damage caused to crops, P. serpens is not considered a phytopathogen parasite, since the promastigote form of the parasite remains restricted to the place of infection (oLIVEIRA et al, 2017).…”
