Auxin and its transport play a role in plant tolerance to arsenite‐induced oxidative stress in Arabidopsis thaliana

Abstract: The role of auxin in plant development is well known; however, its possible function in root response to abiotic stress is poorly understood. In this study, we demonstrate a novel role of auxin transport in plant tolerance to oxidative stress caused by arsenite. Plant response to arsenite [As(III)] was evaluated by measuring root growth and markers for stress on seedlings treated with control or As(III)-containing medium. Auxin transporter mutants aux1, pin1 and pin2 were significantly more sensitive to As(III… Show more

“…[25][26][27] Exogenous application of cytokinins has been reported to increase the stress-tolerance capacity of plants indicating a beneficial effect of CKs in the regulation of plants adaptation to environmental stresses. Thus several studies with abiotic stresses like heavy metals, drought, salt and high temperature have reported that CKs could be involved in regulating antioxidant defence, while information on regulation of antioxidant metabolism under UV-B stress by CKs is lacking.…”

“…For instance, exogenous IAA (1 mM) affected AsA redox status in tomato roots, shifting the ratio toward the oxidized form DHA (Tyburski et al, 2008). Auxin and its transport played a role in plant tolerance to arsenite-induced oxidative stress in Arabidopsis thaliana (Krishnamurthy and Rathinasabapathi, 2013). ROS, auxin, and antioxidants, such as ascorbate, GSH, and related proteins, have been proposed to form a redox signaling module that links plant development with environmental cues (Tognetti et al, 2012).…”

“…The plant hormone auxin plays an important role in not only the responses to oxidative stress (Tamás et al , 2012; Krishnamurthy and Rathinasabapathi, 2013 a ), but also the distribution of Al in cells (Zhu et al , 2013). For example, auxin might be the connecting link that regulates the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and directs the role of ROS in oxidative stress (Iglesias et al , 2010; Krishnamurthy and Rathinasabapathi, 2013 b ).…”
