Autumn swarming of the pond batMyotis dasycnemeat hibernation sites in Latvia

Abstract: Capturing of swarming bats was carried out at five hibernation sites in Latvia in 2005-2007. In total 436 pond bats Myotis dasycneme were caught and marked with forearm rings. The most prominent swarming was observed in August-September, which corresponds with relevant results from other countries. Most bats caught were adults, with the domination of adult males. Spearman's rank correlation showed statistically significant changes in numbers of different age and sex groups of bats during the swarming season. … Show more

“…Male-biased sex ratios predominate in bats at swarming caves during autumn (Piksa 2008;Šuba et al 2008;Vintulis and Šuba 2010). Bats at Colossal Cave demonstrated the same pattern for all species that hibernated in the cave.…”

“…Most typically associated with Myotis bats, swarming is known to occur in seven genera of Microchiropteran bats (Parsons et al 2003). This behavior begins in late summer, peaks in mid-autumn, and ceases in mid-October to early November when bats enter hibernation (Šuba et al 2008;Vintulis and Šuba 2010). Swarming is hypothesized to serve several functions, including finding mates (Parsons et al 2003;Rivers et al 2005), introducing volant young to hibernation sites (Humphrey and Cope 1976;Veith et al 2004), serving as rendezvous sites in migration (Fenton 1969), and assessing conditions inside hibernacula (Davis and Hitchcock 1965;Furmankiewicz and Gó rniak 2002).…”

“…La captura se efectuó con redes de niebla de cinco bolsas (14mm), colocadas dentro de los pasos agrícolas inferiores y ajustadas a la dimensión (Vintulis & Šuba, 2010) de cada paso agrícola inferior. Las 5 sesiones de captura (una por paso) realizadas en agosto, tuvieron una duración de 3 horas, las de mayor actividad de murciélagos (Bat Conservation Trust, 2012).…”

“…In most species, male and female bats live in segregated summer habitats [1, 2; 3, 4, 5]. In autumn sexes meet in mating roosts, the male roosts, or the winter roosts [6,7,8]. The migration behaviour of bats between their summer and winter roosts is unique.…”
