“…These studies documented systematically lower autopsy rates in Denmark than in Finland, particularly for suicides [161], and linked this to a much higher frequency of ill-defined and unknown cause of death codes in the Danish death statistics compared to the Finnish [162]. However, in a costconsequence analysis of the cause of death investigations in the two countries, the same group of researchers stated that the implementation of an alternative practice increasing the autopsy rates in Denmark comes at a price, with costs per 10,000 deaths estimated to increase by about 50% compared to current practice [163].…”

“…Thus, the potential benefit of sustaining adequate autopsy practices for public health and preventive medicine does not seem to be less relevant in rural areas. Since the publication of paper I, some interesting studies investigating various aspects of the differences in autopsy rates between Denmark and Finland have also been published [161][162][163].…”

“…Our finding of lower mortality from alcohol-related causes in the displaced population suggests that these people had personal or social resources that could protect from suicidal behaviour. Classification of causes of death in Finland is considered to be of very high quality due to the high autopsy rate 25 , and therefore misclassification bias with respect to suicide is unlikely to explain this specific finding.…”

“…Unfortunately in Italy majority of traumatic and violent deaths are certified without autopsy and this seems to occur also in those countries where external examination of the body is the most common method used to investigate medico-legal deaths or where investigation can proceed with a forensic autopsy only if a crime is suspected or the manner of death is unclear. 18,21,38 In Italy a significant amount of medico-legal investigations (especially for deaths resulted from trauma following suicide or accidental events like motor vehicle crashes, domestic or occupational accidents) are restricted to an external body examination without subsequent autopsy and/or a crime scene survey even if the event is uncertain. We are talking about 4e5% of all deaths (approximately 580.00 per year) which means with an optimistic estimation there are at least some thousand of forensic autopsies per year that should be performed in every traumatic and violent case.…”
