Autonomous UAV surveillance of a ship's path with MPC for maritime situational awareness

Abstract: Abstract-Maritime Situational Awareness is crucial in maritime operations to identify threats and to deal with them as soon as possible. These threats can be pirates in shipping operations, icebergs when sailing in the northern sea routes, or even unknown vessels or objects that might be on the ship's path. A solution to identify these threats is the use of UAV's to overfly the ship's planned path. This solution is described in this paper, using an autonomous fixed wing UAV. Based on the provided ship's planne… Show more

“…By providing these tools, ardupilot is also, on a simulation level, meant to narrow the reality gap. Consequently, Ardupilot is already used in single-UAV research [5], a fact which indicates that Ardupilot-powered vehicles may become a tendency in the future, hence justifying its improvement to swarm applications.…”

“…Ardupilot is a tool used for autopilot functions in autonomous air, land and underwater robots. Ardupilot is already used in single-UAV research [5] but not ready for swarm applications. Hence, the outcomes of this paper are of great relevance to the future of the field as it addresses a clear gap in the swarm robotics research.…”

“…T HE use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) has becoming very popular as they can have applications in military or civilian fields. Several application tasks appear as images acquisition for surveillance and photogrammetry [24], [45], agriculture [10], plant detection and monitoring [16], smart cities [19], maritime surveillance [2], environmental monitoring [14], [35], disaster surveillance and monitoring [17], monitoring in livestock [5], and geological survey [30], among many others. According to their general physical characteristics they can be grouped simply in two widely known classes, with fixed or rotative wings.…”
