Autonomous motivation for teaching: How self-determined teaching may lead to self-determined learning.

Abstract: This study examined teachers' experience of autonomous motivation for teaching and its correlates in teachers and students. It was hypothesized that teachers would perceive various motivations posited by E. L. Deci and R. M. self-determination theory as falling along a continuum of autonomous motivation for teaching. Autonomous motivation for teaching was predicted to be associated positively with teachers' sense of personal accomplishment and negatively with emotional exhaustion. Most important, teachers' se… Show more

“…Examples of the questions were as follows: "I share my knowledge because "it is fun", "it is pleasant", "I want to understand the subject", and "I will get in trouble if I do not." The measures for autonomous motivation were adapted from Ryan and Connell (1989) and Roth et al (2007) with Cronbach's Alpha ranging from 0.6 to 0.8 and it utilized sevenpoint Likert scale. …”

“…Thus, it is difficult to determine which type of individuals' motivation is actually playing a role in promoting tacit knowledge sharing. Moreover, Self-Determination Theory (SDT) argues that individuals may be autonomously motivated to engage in behaviours rather than being either intrinsically or extrinsically motivated (Roth et al, 2007). Hence, to fill this gap, the study proposed autonomous motivation as it is able to measure an individual's motivation on its different quality levels (Wang & Hou, 2015) based on their Relative Degree of Autonomy (RAI) on the continuum of motivation (Ryan & Connell, 1989) which includes intrinsic motivation, identified regulation, integrated regulation, and extrinsic motivation.…”

“…Howe et al's (2013Howe et al's ( , 2016 software allows for this as in using it the teacher merely acts as facilitator and the student takes on more of the instruction process. This also provides teachers with the opportunity to become more self-determined in their teaching, which in turn can lead to self-determined student learning (Roth, Assor, Kanat-Maymon, & Kaplan, 2007 …”
