Autonomous distributed temperature sensing for long-term heated applications in remote areas

Abstract: Abstract. Distributed temperature sensing (DTS) is a fiberoptical method enabling simultaneous temperature measurements over long distances. Electrical resistance heating of the metallic components of the fiber-optic cable provides information on the thermal characteristics of the cable's environment, providing valuable insight into processes occurring in the surrounding medium, such as groundwater-surface water interactions, dam stability or soil moisture. Until now, heated applications required direct handli… Show more

“…The hydrogeology (i.e., the location, hydraulic conductivity, recharge, and discharge zones of local to regional aquifers) governs the overall spatio-temporal fluxes of surface water-groundwater exchange, and therefore the general gaining or losing character of rivers and river sections [42]. As discussed in the introduction, the HZ is the zone where flowpaths originate from and return to surface water.…”

“…This study used discrete temperature loggers along the fibre-optic cable to capture temporal variability. Recent developments in remote, automated DTS systems (e.g., 48,49 ) show promise for future studies to record distributed temperature measurements at regular intervals throughout the winter. Logistical issues remain with calibration of remote DTS systems, although these have been resolved in some studies by placing calibration cable coils in materials where temperature changes can be monitored accurately by reference instruments (e.g., within and at the base of a snowpack, 50 and in glacier ice 49 ).…”

“…In this paper we discuss the results gained from investigations with distributed temperature sensing (DTS), a fibreoptical method for temperature measurements along a glass fibre (Kurth et al, 2013;Selker et al, 2006a, b). Fibre-optic cables were either installed directly on top or in ca.…”
