Autonomous and Self Controlling Smart Objects for the Future Internet

Abstract: Abstract-Development of IoT applications relies heavily on middleware architectures. Multiple solutions have been proposed using service and agent paradigms, that consequently imposes an specific application development model. We observe a trend towards a data-feeder approach in which smart objects are simple data gatherers and senders. This approach reduce the autonomy of smart objects and brings privacy concerns about the data and service manipulation by remote applications and services. We propose a new app… Show more

“…Hence, these agents provide a high level of interoperability and ease of distributing intelligence, which the IoT can take advantage of in order to develop cognitive networks based on lightweight and interoperable software agents through the web. 76 It is important to note that other proposals have also been developed based on the use of emerging web technologies, but that include a special component such as mobility. For this reason, the aforementioned agent models are analyzed in the following section where the process of object modeling is carried out via mobile agents.…”

“…We implemented a release of FABIoT including the SimDevices and SimSmartObjects agent types, the IoT Sim Engine, SimEnvironment, SimInfrastructure, SimEvent and the Data Tools (Section IV). For the IoT software system, we used a middleware solution that we developed in a previous work [10], [11]. This IoT middleware provides the set of abstractions for an SO-based software development and a p2p communication protocol.…”

“…The middleware implementation was developed in Java using the EVE agent platform 1 and CouchDB 2 for the Knowledge base. This implementation is the second iteration over our initial release presented in [2]. Some of the relevant enhancements include: support to goal hierarchies, p2p role discovery, a message protocol, decoupling of role and scenarios and separation of device management functions.…”

“…It is justified in that chosen platform give us independence from discovery and message protocols, as well as a intrinsic agent/web service interaction. These characteristics provide an open integration environment for SO development [2].…”
