As modern wireless communication networks continue to spread in coverage and ubiquity, so do the applications for networks that take advantage of mobile technology. One of the more interesting areas of research and development is in the development and deployment of vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). VANETs offer the potential for intelligent transportation networks that can both actively and passively improve travel efficiency and safety for the vehicles that use them. Informative content can be delivered to drivers informing them of road conditions or nearby traffic congestion. Entertaining content like multimedia can be delivered to vehicle passengers. To be usable and efficient, VANETs need to be largely autonomous and self-adaptive. The software that organizes the nodes entering and leaving a VANET must be selfmanaging, without requiring their active participation of drivers or passengers in the organization and maintenance of the network. A VANET needs to automatically adapt to changes in the geography over which the network is deployed, and to the highly dynamic behavior of its participant vehicles. It must detect and recover from failures during content delivery, protect the integrity of data being delivered, and protect against malicious attacks by intruders. It should optimize the exchange of information between participant vehicles and roadside infrastructure, making the best use of power and bandwidth. In this paper, we describe the architecture of vehicular ad hoc networks, the principles of autonomic software design, and how the autonomic computing paradigm is applied to VANET applications.

In the modern era of technology, many software systems are legacy software systems that have become too expensive to replace and too costly to re-engineer. Considering the need of improving the business values of such systems is the need to do so in the simplest, cost-effective, and least risky way available. There are a number of approaches used by software engineers to mitigate legacy systems by inserting new computing techniques. A relatively recent technique in software engineering concentrate on implementing self-managing attributes, like autonomic behavior in such legacy software and systems of applications in order to avoid the need for human monitoring and intervention. In this paper survey of different techniques and frameworks for building autonomous system have been presented. These techniques considerably reduces the cost of maintaining legacy systems.

In the modern retailing industry, many enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems are considered legacy software systems that have become too expensive to replace and too costly to re-engineer. Countering the need to maintain and extend the business value of these systems is the need to do so in the simplest, cheapest, and least risky manner available. There are a number of approaches used by software engineers to mitigate the negative impact of evolving a legacy systems, including leveraging serviceoriented architecture to automate manual tasks previously performed by humans. A relatively recent approach in software engineering focuses upon implementing selfmanaging attributes, or "autonomic" behavior in software applications and systems of applications in order to reduce or eliminate the need for human monitoring and intervention. Entire systems can be autonomic or they can be hybrid systems that implement one or more autonomic components to communicate with external systems. In this paper, we describe a commercial development project in which a legacy multi-channel commerce enterprise resource planning system was extended with serviceoriented architecture an autonomic control loop design to communicate with an external third-party security screening provider. The goal was to reduce the cost of the human labor necessary to screen an ever-increasing volume of orders and to reduce the potential for human error in the screening process. The solution automated what was previously an inefficient, incomplete, and potentially error-prone manual process by inserting a new autonomic software component into the existing order fulfillment workflow.
