“…The function of sympathetic innervation is opposite to that of parasympathetic innervation. The release of sympathetic neurotransmitter noradrenalin causes that the detrusor is blocked by inhibitory β-adrenergic receptors and both the bladder neck and the smooth-muscular urethra are tonicized by excitatory detrusor α-adrenergic receptors, thus achieving continence (Nergardh and Boreus 1972, Edvardsen and Setekleiv 1968, Salimi et al 1969, Raezer et al 1973, Awad et al 1974, Levin and Wein 1979. Therefore, the observed increase in the number of adrenergic nerve fibers could be a factor which additionally decreases the spasticity of the overreactive bladder and for that reason improves the treatment.…”

“…Some evidence concerning the distribution of axand ,B-adrenoceptors in urinary bladder has been obtained in single-dose studies on strips from urinary bladder of experimental animals (Edmunds & Roth, 1920;Young & Macht, 1923;Edvardsen & Setekleiv, 1-968;Salimi, Setekleiv & Skobba, 1969;Malin & Boyarsky, 1970;Rohner, Raezer, Wein & Schoenberg, 1971;Nergardh & Boreus, 1972) and of man (Wesson, 1920;Young & Macht, 1923;Coupar & Turner, 1969;Todd & Mack, 1969;Nergardh & Boreus, 1972). Few studies, however, have compared detrusor and bladder neck in man (Young & Macht, 1923;Nergardh & Boreus, 1972).…”

“…Such an operation should, therefore, not be considered before the 3rd or 4th month post-injury. As an alternative to surgery it is worthwhile trying a medical treatment with alpha-adrenergic blocking agents such as phenoxybenzamine since adrenergic ganglion cells and fibres have been described in the bladder neck and proximal urethra of different mammalian species, as well as in humans (Nergardh & Boreus, 1972;Caine, Raz & Zeigler, FIG. 3 Voiding cysto-urethrogram showing the various points of reference measured in our urodynamic studies.…”
