Autonomic Nervous System Activity During Bladder Filling Assessed by Heart Rate Variability Analysis in Women With Idiopathic Overactive Bladder Syndrome or Stress Urinary Incontinence

Abstract: This preliminary study demonstrates the predominance of parasympathetic activity with the bladder emptied and a preponderance of sympathetic activity at the end of bladder filling in women with overactive bladder syndrome. These results suggest dysfunction in the autonomic balance, as implied in idiopathic overactive bladder syndrome. Further studies in a larger population of patients with overactive bladder syndrome with reference to normal subjects free of urinary symptoms are necessary to confirm this hypot… Show more

“…Table 2 shows the HRV indicators used in this study as well as the key for all abbreviations. The time domain indicators used in this study included mean HR, which is an indicator of sympathovagal balance; standard deviation in the normal RR interval (STDRR) and HRV triangular index, which are indicators of global HRV [28] ; standard deviation of the selected HR series (STDHR), which is a measure of the long-term components of HRV [28] , and square root of the mean squared differences of successive RR intervals (RMSSD), which is an indicator of parasympathetic nervous system activity [29] . The frequency domain indicators used included the high-frequency component (HF) at [30][31][32][33] , while the autonomic contributions to the LF component are still being investigated and no consensus currently exists.…”

“…Therefore, HF and LF were measured in both absolute power (ms 2 ) and normalized units (nu) in this study. The LF/HF ratio was investigated as a measure of sympathovagal balance [30-34, 36, 37] , whereby an increase in the LF/HF ratio indicates a dominance of sympathetic activity and a decrease in the LF/HF ratio indicates parasympathetic predominance [29] . The Poincaré plot indicators used included SD1, which is an indicator of short-term HRV, representing parasympathetic nervous system activity on the sinus node [27] , and SD2, which reflects global HRV as an inverse function of sympathetic modulation [34] .…”

“…У змінених холінергічних волокнах розвивається підвищена чутливість до холінергічної нервової стимуляції, що проявляється нестабільними скороченнями детрузора [2]. У літературі достатньо широко представлені результати дослідження порушень акту сечовипускання із застосуванням функціо-нальних методів дослідження [2][3][4][5]. Морфологіч-ні дослідження автономної нервової системи ГАСМ практично відсутні.…”
