“…Our previous study showed that the dysfunction of autonomic control is associated with NTG and that NTG patients with LHV may present central visual field defects. 10,12 This study revealed potential relationships between autonomic dysfunction, as assessed by HRV analysis, and systemic ET-1 levels. Patients with high sympathetic activity exhibited decreased ET-1 levels.…”

“…[7][8][9] We previously used short-term HRV analysis to reveal autonomic dysfunction in patients with NTG. 10 Increased sympathetic activity of the heart results in decreased HRV, which is important in maintaining the ability of the heart to respond to various internal and external conditions. 7,11 The consistent elevation of sympathetic activity may constrict the microvasculature and result in vascular insufficiency around the ONH.…”

“…Autonomic dysfunction has also been demonstrated in patients with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and normotensive glaucoma (NTG) 19 20. Procedures implicating autonomic nervous system disorders, such as the estimation of heart rate variability and cold pressor test, have been reported to be impaired in migraineurs21 22 during headache-free periods and in patients with glaucoma 19 20.…”

“…Procedures implicating autonomic nervous system disorders, such as the estimation of heart rate variability and cold pressor test, have been reported to be impaired in migraineurs21 22 during headache-free periods and in patients with glaucoma 19 20. Gherghel et al 20 reported a significant decrease in ocular blood flow and changes in blood pressure responses of patients with POAG compared with normal subjects in response to cold provocation, suggesting systemic autonomic failure and vascular dysregulation as an aetiologic factor in POAG.…”

“…This is a simple and non-invasive method that reflects the balance of the autonomic nervous system in regulating the heart rate. [17][18][19] We used short-term HRV analysis previously to demonstrate autonomic dysfunction in NTG patients 20 and that the plasma endothelin-1 (ET-1) level was associated with HRV parameters in these patients. 21 Although we showed in a previous study that there was no significant difference in the systemic MMP-9 concentration between NTG patients and normal controls, any possible relationship between the MMP-9 level and other characteristics of NTG patients, including ODH, required elucidation.…”
