Autonomic cardiovascular control recovery in quadriplegics after handcycle training

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the cardiovascular autonomic acute response, during recovery after handcycle training, in quadriplegics with spinal cord injury (SCI). [Subjects and Methods] Seven quadriplegics (SCIG −level C6–C7, male, age 28.00 ± 6.97 years) and eight healthy subjects (CG −male, age 25.00 ± 7.38 years) were studied. Their heart rate variability (HRV) was assessed before and after one handcycle training. [Results] After the training, the SCIG showed significantly reduced: intervals be… Show more

“…Successive measurements during a 90-minute period post workout showed a significant decrease in HF, LF, and LF/HF ratio values immediately after exercise, as previously reported. 4,21,25,33 HRV response to other exercise modalities has also been described. Takahashi et al 34 reported a decrease in LF and HF immediately after static arm exercise in patients with tetraplegia, with a recovery to normal values in 90 seconds.…”

“…Two studies used a 24-hour ECG recording, 18,19 one study used a 4-hour recording, 20 and 5 studies performed a short HRV recording of 15 minutes or less. [21][22][23][24][25] Data are summarized in Table 1.…”

“…Our voice-casting robot will select phrases differently based on its judgment of comfort/discomfort. Abreu et al's threshold was used for the comfort/discomfort emotion judgment based on the pNN50 value [38]. In their work, they found that 0.23 was appropriate as a threshold to indicate comfort.…”
