Automotive transmission efficiency measurement using a chassis dynamometer

Abstract: Automotive transmission efficiency measurements are usually performed on purpose-built rigs. A simple model was developed for calculating the overall transmission efficiency of passenger cars by using a chassis dynamometer. Wheel power and engine output were measured, and these values were used for calculations. The proposed method can only be employed for vehicles with manual drive because it requires constant speed measurements. Two case studies were investigated, with front-wheel and rear-wheel drive passen… Show more

“…The established relationships can then be used for direct or reverse engineering such as [22]. In order to connect automotive gearboxes as in case study [23], the results for the torque measurements of these structures [24] and [25], as well as torque based vehicle speed control [26], are used. This paper offers a new and specific approach based on the integration of axiomatic and robust methodology directed towards load capacity identification of the existing design structure or the design parameters definition in the design process of the new mechanical structure.…”

“…where h t (transmission efficiency) was calculated throughout the rpm range based on full load P e and P w measurements [29]. Full load, as well as part load measurements were performed for the entire engine speed range when fueling the engine with gasoline, 10% (IB10), 30% (IB30) and 50% (IB50) isobutanol blended with the fossil fuel on a volumetric basis.…”
