Automictic parthenogenesis in the parasitoidVenturia canescens(Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) revisited

Abstract: Both arrhenotokous and thelytokous reproduction are known to occur in the parasitoid wasp Venturia canescens. The cytological mechanism of thelytoky was previously reported to involve the formation of a restitution metaphase after the reduction division, but the exact nature of the subsequent divisions, whether reductional or equational, remained unclear. We reinvestigated the cytological mechanisms in a thelytokous strain collected in France. Our observations confirm previous results, but an equational and no… Show more

“…(2) Automixis, where meiotic reduction is compensated, produces diploid gametes by premeitotic doubling, fusion of two of the four meiotic nuclei, or fusion of cleaved nuclei and results in decline of heterozygosity in the offspring, except for the case of premeiotic doubling where offspring is genetically identical to the mother. While apomixis has been observed in several orders of insects, it has only been observed in a few species in Hymenoptera where automixis seems to prevail (Suomalainen et al, 1987;Beukeboom and Pijnacker, 2000).…”

“…In V. canescens both arrhenotoky and thelytoky are obligate, while the latter is not caused by Wolbachia bacteria but most likely has a genetical basis (Beukeboom and Pijnacker, 2000). Thelytokous females produce haploid eggs that undergo diploidisation and develop parthenogenetically into females only.…”

“…Thelytokous females produce haploid eggs that undergo diploidisation and develop parthenogenetically into females only. Diploidy restoration occurs through abortion of a reduction division and metaphase I restitution (Speicher et al, 1965;Beukeboom and Pijnacker, 2000). The genetic consequences are similar to central fusion automictic parthenogenesis (Suolmalainen et al, 1987).…”

“…These parasitoids have a wide tolerance about changing in abiotic factors and differences in host distribution and specificity. Additionally, thelytoky strain of this parasitoid may have different biology (Beling, 1932;Gade & Parker, 1997;Jokela et al, 1997;Vrijenhoek, 1999;Beukeboom & Pijnacker, 2000;Barke et al, 2005).…”
