Automation of Merchant Ship Navigation Systems

Abstract: The use of automated merchant ship navigation systems is presently under evaluation by several ship operators. Evaluation includes definition of practical shipboard requirements and appraisal of economic benefits projected for positioning, collision avoidance, and complete conning systems. This paper reviews the systems under evaluation, rationale that stimulated the present evaluation, and projected trends in shipboard automation.
