Automatic Vehicle Trajectory Extraction for Traffic Analysis From Aerial Video Data

Abstract: ABSTRACT:This paper presents a new approach to simultaneous detection and tracking of vehicles moving through an intersection in aerial images acquired by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Detailed analysis of spatial and temporal utilization of an intersection is an important step for its design evaluation and further traffic inspection. Traffic flow at intersections is typically very dynamic and requires continuous and accurate monitoring systems. Conventional traffic surveillance relies on a set of fixed ca… Show more

“…Similarly, Shirazi and Morris [51] used a Gaussian mixture model to detect vehicles at signalized intersections together with a Kalman filter for trajectory extraction. Apeltauer et al [12] developed another automated method for trajectory extraction in which vehicles are detected using a two-stage classifier trained based on multi-block local binary pattern (MB-LBP) features. This method also requires applying background subtraction in order to generate the foreground mask.…”

“…This framework involved video preprocessing and stabilization, vehicle detection and tracking, and ultimately, management of the extracted trajectories. Similar to [11,12], Khan et al [13] carried out the vehicles' detection using background subtraction algorithm.…”

“…As stated earlier, the semi-automatic approach requires a great deal of time for processing while, on the other hand, the automatic approach promises a quick processing and analysis procedure, ultimately leading to the real-time analysis of the UAV acquired data. Recently, the number of studies based on the automated approach have increased [1,[15][16][17][18]. The authors have been attempting to extract various traffic parameters and vehicle trajectories in an automatic environment by using state-of-the art object detection and tracking algorithms.…”
