Emerging international standards for Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) projects require a demonstrated biodiversity benefit and a biodiversity monitoring protocol. Guidance for an acceptable protocol is proposed specifically for tropical forests, focusing on technologies that are widely available, rigorous, and aimed at important indicator taxa for forest function. Two techniques, camera trapping for large and mesoscale mammals and acoustic monitoring for bats, are proposed as current technologies that meet the criteria for a model biodiversity monitoring protocol for REDD projects.Keywords: REDD; biodiversity monitoring; bats; climate change; deforestation ResumenRecientes estándares internacionales para proyectos de deforestación y degradación con emisiones reducidas (REDD, siglas en inglés), requieren tanto de un beneficio demostrable en biodiversidad como de un protocolo para su monitoreo. Algunas pautas para un protocolo aceptable son expuestas, específicamente para bosques tropicales, basadas en tecnologías ampliamente accesibles, rigurosas, y enfocadas en taxa indicadoras importantes para la función de los bosques. Se proponen la captura de imágenes de mamíferos medianos y grandes a través de cámaras instaladas en el bosque, y el monitoreo acústico de murciélagos, como técnicas actualizadas que cumplen con los criterios de un protocolo modelo de monitoreo de biodiversidad para proyectos de deforestación y degradación con emisiones reducidas (REDD).Palabras clave: REDD; monitoreo de biodiversidad; murciélagos, cambio climático; deforestación.

Camera traps have become a widely used technique for conducting biological inventories, generating a large number of database records of great interest. The main aim of this paper is to describe a new Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), developed to facilitate the management of camera trapped data originated in a protected Mediterranean area (SE Spain). In the last decade, some other useful alternatives have been proposed, but ours focuses especially on a collaborative undertaking and on the importance of spatial information underpinning common camera trap studies. This FOSS application, namely "Camera Trap Manager" (CTM), has been designed to expedite the processing of the pictures on the .NET platform. CTM has a very intuitive user interface, automatic extraction of some image metadata (date, time, moon phase, location, temperature, atmospheric pressure, among others), analytical (Geographical Information Systems, statistics, charts, among others) and reporting capabilities (ESRI Shapefiles, Microsoft Excel Spreadsheets, PDF reports, among others). Using this application we have achieved a very simple management, fast analysis, and a significant reduction of costs. While we were able to classify an average of 55 pictures per hour manually, CTM has made it possible to process over 1,000 photographs per hour, consequently retrieving a greater amount of data.

Trends in cheetah Acinonyx jubatus density in north‐central Namibia

Assessing trends in abundance and density of species of conservation concern is vital to inform conservation and management strategies. The remaining population of the cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) largely exists outside of protected areas, where they are often in conflict with humans. Despite this, the population status and dynamics of cheetah outside of protected areas have received relatively limited attention across its range. We analyzed remote camera trapping data of nine surveys conducted from 2005 to 2014 in the Waterberg Conservancy, north‐central Namibia, which included detections of 74 individuals (52 adult males, 7 adult females and 15 dependents). Using spatial capture–recapture methods, we assessed annual and seasonal trends in cheetah density. We found evidence of a stable trend in cheetah density over the study period, with an average density of 1.94/100 km2 (95% confidence interval 1.33–2.84). This apparent stability of cheetah density is likely the result of stable and abundant prey availability, a high tolerance to carnivores by farmers and low turnover rates in home range tenure. This study highlights the importance of promoting long‐term surveys that capture a broad range of environmental variation that may influence species density and the importance of nonprotected areas for cheetah conservation.
