Multiple overtracing strokes are common drawing behaviors in freehand sketching; that is, additional strokes are often drawn repeatedly over the existing ones to add more details. This paper proposes a method based on stroke-tolerance zones to group multiple overtraced strokes which are drawn to express a 2D primitive, aiming to convert online freehand sketches into 2D line drawings, which is a base for further 3D reconstruction. Firstly, after the user inputs a new stroke, a tolerance zone around the stroke is constructed by reference to its polygonal approximation points obtained from the stroke preprocessing. Then, the input strokes are divided into stroke groups, each representing a primitive through the stroke grouping process based on the overtraced ratio of two strokes. At last, each stroke group is fitted into one or more 2D geometric primitives including line segments, polylines, ellipses, and arcs. The proposed method groups two strokes together based on their screen-space proximity directly instead of classifying and fitting them firstly, so that it can group strokes of arbitrary shapes. A sketch-recognition prototype system has been implemented to test the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results showed that the proposed method could support online multiple overtracing freehand sketching with no limitation on drawing sequence, but it only deals with strokes with relatively high overtraced ratio.

Abstract. Nowaday, rapid product development (RPD) becomes a crucial approach for the success of a company in a competitive market when the complexity and diversity of products keep increasing while their lifetimes are getting shorter and shorter. Freehand sketch is a tool that is closer and more practical for customer to communicate his/her ideas to manufacturer. The sketch is typically transformed to be a 3D model for technologies such as rapid prototyping where a physical prototype is fabricated from a 3D model. Presented in this paper is a review of sketch-based modeling that allows customers-manufacturers to speed up the idea realization. Sketch-based modeling has been developed not only to transform a sketch to be a 3D model but also to interface with rapid prototyping.

Creating 3D Human Character Mesh Prototypes from a Single Front-View Sketch

3D character modeling, a vital part in film and video game production, is a process that starts by blocking out the basic geometry of a character, which is then transformed into a detailed and enhanced mesh. This process can be a long and daunting task to novice modelers. As a result, extensive research in the area of sketch-based modeling has focused on finding solutions that facilitate this process.We developed a sketch-based modeling system that constructs the basic 3D geometry of a human character mesh based on a single front-view sketch and minimal user interaction through a simple interface. The main objective of this system is to help novice modelers by automating the initial phase of the modeling process with the aid of an intuitive user interface, and to construct a basic mesh with suitable structure that conforms to common modeling techniques.We conducted a user study to evaluate the system's user interface and produced mesh.Results show that our system's user interface is intuitive and easy to use. In addition, the system produces suitable meshes that modelers considered usable to facilitate the modeling process. Moreover, the processing time of our system is faster than the average time it takes modelers to manually construct a similar mesh, an advantage that benefits modelers who value the speed of a sketch-based modeling system, in addition to the accuracy of its results.ii Acknowledgments I would like to give special thanks to my supervisor, Professor Chris Joslin, for sharing his valuable knowledge, for his guidance and support, and his patience throughout this journey.
