Automatic Segmentation of the Lumen in Magnetic Resonance Images of the Carotid Artery

Abstract: The segmentation of the lumen and vessel wall in Magnetic Resonance (MR) images of carotid arteries represents a crucial step towards the evaluation of cerebrovascular diseases. However, the automatic segmentation of the lumen is still difficult due to the usual low quality of the images and the presence of elements that might affect the accuracy of the results. In this article, we describe a fully automatic method to identify the location of the lumen in MR images of the carotid artery. A circularity index is… Show more

“…Over the past years, several studies have used computer-aided diagnosis to improve the efficiency and accuracy of segmentation and reduce the burden on doctors for the interpretation of medical images ( Ladak et al, 1999 ; Sakellarios et al, 2012 ; Jodas et al, 2018 ). However, these methods sometimes require user intervention.…”

“…This approach is fully automatic, because seeds are selected from experimentally determined intervals according to the local histogram, and good agreement with expert manual measurements was achieved. Additionally, Tavares et al (13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19) proposed a series of novel methods related to automatic artery segmentation, the classification of calcified regions, and hemodynamics in multi-modality medical images.…”

“…Computer-aided methods have been developed for better identification of the carotid lumen and atherosclerotic components. Automatic segmentation of the lumen of the carotid artery is done in ultrasound Bmode images 33 and in magnetic resonance images 34 . Patient-specific 3D luminal surface reconstruction and computer fluid stimulation gives better understanding of the hemodynamic parameters in the place of the plaque.…”
