Automatic generation control of a wind farm with variable speed wind turbines

Abstract: Wind farms are considered to be negative loads from the point of view of a utility manager. Modern variable-speed wind turbines offer the possibility for controlling active and reactive power separately. This paper presents a new integrated control system of a wind farm according to the utility manager requirements. This control system is based on two control levels: A supervisory system controls active and reactive power of the whole wind farm by sending out set points to all wind turbines, and a machine cont… Show more

“…Mechanic output power can be decreased to a new ideal level through valve control [4] . For a certain plant, turning off valves can change the output power to 0 within 0.6-0.7s [5] and steam turbine can turn off all the valves in 0.3s to complete abscission [6] . In conclusion, generator tripping can be finished in 0.3s for thermal plants and 50%-60% of power output can be decreased through rapid valve turning off in 0.3-.04s.…”

“…Reference [7] presents a control system based on NNs to generate a value for the aerodynamic power coefficient, p C . A similar work was presented in [8]. It is in this context that this work gives its contribution, presenting a control strategy using NNs to generate the reference parameters to control the generator: the operating point changes during the normal functioning or, in the case of using turbines of variable speed or in situation of fault occurrence, PI controllers can't supply an enough damping or an acceptable performance.…”
