Automatic Exercise Generation in Euclidean Geometry

Abstract: Abstract. Automatic assessment has recently drawn the efforts of researchers in a number of fields. While most available approaches deal with the construction of question items that assess factual and conceptual knowledge, this paper presents a method and a tool for generating questions assessing procedural knowledge, in the form of simple proof problems in the domain of the Euclidean Geometry. The method is based on rules defined as Horn clauses. The method enumerates candidate problems and certain techniques… Show more

“…Different techniques for creating exercises have been presented in prior work: (š‘–) Context-Free grammar [5,11,20,44,45]; (š‘–š‘–) Templates; (š‘–š‘–š‘–) Mutation [6,39]; (š‘–š‘£) Construction from solution [3,32]; (š‘£) Natural language processing [2,4,8,14,26,27,31,35,40,43,46,47]. This paper applies the Template approach through which patterns have been identified from previous statements to shape new instances.…”

“…Papasalouros [25] describes a method to automatically generate exercises based on Horn clauses and applies it to the domain of Euclidean Geometry. This proposal defines a set of operators to move from the initial to the goal states.…”

“…IJILT 35,3 2. Automated mathematics word PG Several research studies in the literature have been concerned with the automated generation of problems in the mathematics domain (Goguadze et al, 2005;Heeren et al, 2010;Papasalouros, 2013;Singh et al, 2012). Nevertheless, relatively few research studies addressed the problem of generating narrative mathematical word problems.…”
