Abstract.As the e-learning is becoming more and more popular and widely used all over the world, finding a reliable and effecitve method to evaluate performance of leanrer becomes a problem. However, most of current methods fail to reflect the true study status of the learner. In this paper, an image processing technique based method to obtain index of distraction by estimating head pose of learner is proposed. It uses a single PC camera to capture the facial information of the learner and then gets positions of facial features by analyzing the facial image. Then it uses position information to estimate the roll angle of the head and the horizontal yaw angle of the face in order to calculate the key index to judge the distraction rate of the learner with a designated formula. A series of experiments show that despite the accuracy of head pose estimation is not so well (about 40%), the success rate of judging distraction status can reach nearly 80% if the head pose estimation succeed.

Assessment is a delicate task in the overall teaching process because it may require significant time and may be prone to subjectivity. Subjectivity is especially true for disciplines in which perceptual factors play a key role in the evaluation. In previous decades, computer-based assessment techniques were developed to address the above-mentioned challenges and to automatically grade students' work in a variety of educational fields. In this paper, the application of automatic assessment strategies in the unexplored domain of computer graphics is discussed. In particular, a tool that is designed to evaluate student assignments for a 3D computer animation course taught at Politecnico di Torino University is presented. During laboratory examination sessions, students are requested to individually operate on the open-source Blender suite and to recreate a 3D animation similar to a reference one. Student's output is assessed against a set of similarity indicators, which are specifically designed to capture the technical and perceptual factors that would be blended in a traditional teacher's evaluation. A comparison of the results that are achieved by the computer-based tool with grades assigned by visual inspection confirms the effectiveness of the designed approach and displays a high-quality concurrence between automatic and manual evaluations.

Digital humanities in Spain: Historical perspective and current scenario

The objective of this study was to provide the global community of interested scholars with an updated understanding of digital humanities in Spain, in terms of researchers and research centres, disciplines involved and research topics of interest, trends in digital resources development, main funding bodies and the evolution of their investment since the early nineties. One of the characteristics that differentiates this study from previous approaches is the information used to carry out the research. It combines large datasets of publicly available data from trusted sources with a handpicked selection of records grouping information scattered over the Web. Most of the evidence detected by other studies has been numerically confirmed. At the same time, the new metrics and values established constitute a reference base for monitoring the future evolution of the discipline, and thus favour comparisons. Half of the researchers were found to be affiliated to only nine institutions, whereas the other half of them were scattered across 84 locations. Department affiliation showed a varied pattern of the different degrees of specialization in each institution. Although the major historic role played by Philology was confirmed, the rising interest of other areas of the Humanities and Social Science produces a wider picture, which helped to identify five large clusters of research topics, centred on major disciplines. The quantitative analysis of funding, a dimension almost unexplored in the Humanities, proved to be a valuable way to assess the discipline and its historical evolution. In fact, it revealed interesting trends that led to our proposal of a three-phase periodization in the consolidation of digital humanities in Spain. The paper concludes with a set of recommendations regarding how to deal with issues that could harm the future development of this research area and the role that Spanish researchers can play in the international context.
